The past and present
will meld on the sports
complex floor on Saturday
night'. when "Canada's
Largest Travelling Barn
Dance" comes to town,
The Barn: Dance
Historical Society's
CKNX Barn Dance will
feature artists from ,the
former Barn Dance, new,
artists. and some, very spe-
cial guests including
Lucknow's Larry
MacPherson who we will
claim as our own'home-
grown talent'.
Last month,. the Barn
Dance played in Listowel.
In a review of the evening,
Marion Duke, with the
Listowel Banner, wrote:-
* "If there was only' one
word to describe the per
formers,a mix of original.
Bam Dance musicians and.
new talent, it would be
'professional.'
"From the every quick-
witted commentary by the,
Barn Dance's one and only
emcee, John Brent, to the
endearing voices of Earl
and Martha Heywood, to
,the dynamite fiddling of
young Melissa Diebold of :
St. Clements, .one of the
newcomers the. 1997,
version of the CKNX Barn
Dance has lost none of its.
original energy or charm.
Eight hundred people
took in the performance. in
Listowel, one of six sched-
uled for this .year. '
Thee history of the Barn
Dance stems back to 1937.
when "Doc" Cruikshank,
founder of CKNX
Wingham, liked a program
of recorded country music,
called the `CKNX, Barn
Dance', and decided to
turn. it into a regular .pro-
gram utilizing live music.
"Crowds soon gathered on
the street to watch the
Saturday night CKNX
Barn Dance throughthe
front window of the stu-
dio." (from History of the
Barn Dance)..
The show then went on
the roadand via long dis-
tance telephone lines was
transmitted back to the
studio and onto the air
waves. By 1950 the pro-
gram was deemed a hit
throughout all of south-
western Ontario and
became internationally
known as °`Canada's
