"There was a day when the manager of a bank branch could be all things to all people but life in today's fast lane is a lot more complicated and it has become too much to expect a superior level of skills for each and every face of today's banking needs." Forster said it wasn't too difficult to establish that there are two distinct seg- ments to banking in Canada, the commercial sector and, with vastly different needs, the personal banking sector. "At the Bank of Montreal, we reasoned that by separating these two functions we would be able to bring more expertise, specialization and professionalism to the banking service we provide for our custom- ers." But Forster pointed out that while commercial and personal banking are separ- ate, under the Bank of Montreal's CHU concept customers do not have to change branches for their day-to-day banking busi- ness, a point. he said, that sets the Bank of Montreal's program apart from others. The CHU comes into play where commer- cial credit, the annual account review, or non-credit services are involved. Even then, Forster explained, "the client retains the choice -- he can either come to see us at our Unit or one of our managers will visit him." In the branches, one of the changes will have the manager no longer behind closed doors but out on the banking floor closer to customers, where the manager can do marketing of personal banking products in a more professional manner. The manager's private office will become a conference room for customers with confidential business to transact. But Forster said "the biggest change you will see in your bank branch is a perceptible upgrading in the level of service and individual advice from the manager and from the customer service personnel to which you will now have direct access, "This is because, relieved of the commer- cial lending and portfolio administration chores, the branch manager and staff will now be able to concentrate on providing you with the best personal banking service in Canada."
