The chance meeting was at the Holiday Inn there. Others from this area on the tour were Marie Farrell, Connie van der Hoek, and Bette MacLeod. Early in November Cadet Ian Macpher- son of Ripley was chosen to represent his Air Cadet Corps in Goderich on a three day Flight Training event. this event originated out of Base Trenton Ontario. The cadets flew to Goose Bay in Labrador, after having stopovers in Chatham N.B. and Summer - side P.E.1. An aerial night view of New York City, Rochester and Buffalo completed the course, Later cadet Macpherson com- mented It was great ... really great." Visiting Rev, and Mrs. Glefr Macpherson in Ripley over the recent American Thanksgiving holiday in November were Mrs. Macpherson's sister and husband Greta and Charles Hall of Chicago. A point of interest is that Mrs. Hall is both a national and an international speed skating referee. And she is the first woman to hold such positions. Agricultural Society The December meeting of the Ripley Agricultural Society was held on Monday evening this week at 8 p.m. in the Ripley District School. While this is the last meeting for the calen- dar year 1983 it will still be followed by the annual meeting likely in January. the telephone callers for the Monday night meeting were Keith van der Hoek and Sheila MacDonald. Details of the meeting will be in this column next week. Keep baking soda handy On Saturday evening just a few minutes before the six o'clock supper and dinner time, which ever you prefer, the Ripley fire whistle blew and everyone wondered where the fire was. However, it was a "no go call" in that when the firemen got to the firehall they did not have to go as the folks down there called back to say that they had it under control. And the firemen were able to return home. Mrs. Betty Cook, wife of Ripley fire chief Ivan Cook, received both the alarm call and the cancellation call. All readers who feel that they might have a chimney fire, should get a fresh package of baking soda and keep it handy. Should a fire start in the pipes or chimney, throw the box into the stove. The heat causes the soda to give off carbon diox- ide gas which will go up the pipes and smother the fire by cutting off the oxygen. Home from hospital The people of Ripley and area will be glad to know that Stewart Shiells was able to come home to Riley last Saturday. It has been a long trip both in days and in miles since Stewart suffered his hip fracture - first to Kincardine and District Hospital then to St. Joseph's Hospital in London. After surgery in St. Joe's and a stay there it was back to Kincardine for further recovery. Both Stewart and his wife Clara will be glad to be home again. All wish them well. Pictured in last week's paper were the Kincardine Community Singers at their an- nual Christmas concert in the Kincardine Knox Presbyterian Church.
