Horticultural Society learn to make Christmas arrangements
The Ripley and District Horticultural
Societyheld their regular meeting on Tues-
day aternoon October 25th in the Riley
Legion Hall. Members were welcomed by
Mrs, Katie Irwin,
President Mrs. Mary Black was in charge
of the business period. During this time
there was a discussion on the recruiting of
new members.
Mrs. Mary Worthington introduced Mrs.
Pat Holloway from Jerome Flowers in Kin-
cardine. Mrs, Holloway explained the dif-
ferent ways of making beautiful Christmas
arrangements from articles we have on
hand or by using some inexpensive new
items. Everyone enjoyed the
demonstration.
Mrs, Holloway donated time of the ar-
rangements for pries. The winners were
Ibbs. Mita Irwin, Mrs. ttetta MacLennan,
and Mrs. Connie van der Hoer. Mrs. Wor-
thington conducted a musical flower contest
with Mrs. Violet MaeKenzie assisting at the
plana. Winners were Mrs. Connie van der
Hoek and Ibbs. June Wylds, Mrs. Olwen
McAuley thanked all who participated
Ripley agricultural ocieiy wing
first in quilt competition
The annual fall meeting of District 10 of
the Ontario Agricultural Societies was held
last Saturday, October in Chatsworth
south of Owen Sound, District 10 covers all
of Hruce and Grey Counties with their 28
Agricultural Societies and fall fairs,
Representing the Ripley Agricultural
Society at this meeting were Gorton Patter=
son, Janet Parrell and lAtida Campbell,
In charge of the meeting was District
Director Leonard Patterson of Harriston,
Leonard and his wife Ida are known in this
area having attended the fairs and annual
meetings here during his past fourears as
the District Director, Leonard also lag been
a field crop Judge here, He has now retired
as District Director,
The new District Director is Burton
Hodgins and the new Associate or Lady
Director is Mrs, Bessie Parrell bath of the
Kincardine Agricultural Society and both
well known in the Ripley Huron area. The
past District and Associate Directors are
holding a dinner meeting in the Walkerton
Agricultural hall on the evening of
November,
The big news for the Ripley Agricultural
Society was the quilt entered from the
t ipley fall fair won first erre in the District
Quilt Competition sponsored by Canada
Packers of Toronto,
It was the otiginal design quilt by Mrs,
Evelyn Hridga of Kincardine: At
CtiataiiMilhon Saturday there were 24 dif-
ferent quilts — each a winner at a local fait
in District 10, It will now be entered in the
Provincial competition with othet District
winners at the annual convention in the
Ronal York Hotel in Taranto in maid
Ire my.
Fecds ntigrating grosbeaks
Migration time
Dr. Hill Crawford of Blairs Grove called
on Sunday afternoon to report on the arrival
of a flack of evening grosbeaks that morn-
ing. Hy an estimate count the number was
set at 200. In two and a half hours they had
Men five litres of sunflower seeds. Hill had
used their picnic table which is about five
feet in diameter as a feeding platform far
the crowd.
The southward invasion of these
osbeaks wag widespread in this area. On
un y morning a flack of about 50 were
feeding ori the keys of one of the Manitoba
maple trees at the back of the Noreen Ma&
Donald lot on Malcolm Street.

Garden produce, plants, and pickles were
auctioned off by Mrs. Carol tilatkwell and
Mrs. Edna Stanley.
A delicious lunch was served byMrs.
Minerva Stewart Mrs. MaryScott, lbs. An-
nie Culbert and Mrs. Edna Avery.
The next meeting will be a pat lurk lun-
cheon in the Riley Legion Hall at 12 noon on
November 15. Come and bring a friend. Mrs.
Mary Worthington reported the meeting.
The Huron Bruce Arts and Crafts Incor-
porated, sponsors of the well known Ripley
Craft Show each July held their annual din-
ner meeting last Thursday evening in the
Ripley Legion Hall. Attending were five
couples on the committee namely Olivet
and p Marion MtCharles, Omar and Dora
Htooks, Dan and Anne McInnes of Blyth,
Russ and Jean Phillips, and Mr. and Mts.
flab Markham.
Also five guest couples - Grant and Har -
to McDonald and children, Mr. and Mrs.
Wallace Hallo h, Prancis and Mar:: ret
Gemmell, Wally and Elaine Pollock, Don
and Anna MacTavish.
Catering for the dinner were the ladies of
the Ripley Legion Auxiliary. All members
were in favour of holding another craft show
on the last Friday and Saturday in July.
The group divided their proceeds among
the Ripley Legion, the Ripley and. District
Lions the churches in Ripley the
Rehabilitation Centre Transportation
Department, and to the Arts in bath Huron
and truce and also to the Cancer Society.
The bank account was once again depleted
and all were happy in making these dona-
tions to local projects.
