An Open Letter to,
All Members of parliament,
House of Commons,
Ottawa, Ontario,
Today, the terrible threat of nuclear
annihilation hangs like an ominous cloud
over the heads of all human beings
inhabiting this earth, No danger of this
magnitude has ever confronted human kind
in all of recorded history.
The arms race has now reached terrifying
proportions and the foolish game of one-
upmanship now being played by world
leaders is dangerous in the extreme, For
some incomprehensible reason it seems to
have escaped the attention of present world
powers that nuclear weapons as a means of
defense or offense can never be used. To do
so would spell the end of man's existence
upon this planet and the continued presence
of these deadly weapons poses a constant
threat to man's survival,
We stand today at the very edge of this
awful abyss. One moment of panic, one error
in judgement, one act of carelessness, one
accident, can unleash a nuclear nightmare
upon the world. Nothing would be left then
but the smoke curling up from the ashes of
our once beautiful planet,
It is quite possible that there will be no
human intelligence then to make any kind of
an assessment, but should there be, what
kind of questions would he be asking himself
as he surveyed the smoking ruins in the
wake of a nuclear holocaust?
Firstly, I think he would have to ask
himself why we did not realize that the piling
up of nuclear arms as a deferent to nuclear
war was not only wastefulof human and
material resources but in the year 1983 had
become a totally futile exercise M1
humanity, seemingly paralysed, watched
with horror as one deadly weapon succeeded
another in the mad race for nuclear
supremacy; a race in which all would lose; a
race toward man's extinction.

Making
changes
to a
watercourse?
The waters of rivers, streams and crooks belong to everyone.
!Improper used of the watercourses winch carry these waters may
result in the following?
• irrigation and drainage problems for neighbours
- destruction of aquatic, and wildlife habitat
• reduced recreational opportunities
- erosion and flooding problems
Whenever permanently flowing watercourses erre to be altered in
any way including damming, diverting, and cftianneliiatton,
Federal and Provincial laws require that the approval of the
Ministry of Natural Resources be obtained.
As a first step in Manning an -y wort( on a watercourse, contact us.
Our staff will be glad to discuss possible design and layout alter-

Secondly, 1 think he would have to ask
himself why we did not realize that we had
so little time left? Even bad in 1983 had the
governments of the world made a concerted
effort to turn this thing around our chances
of avoiding a nuclear war were not good, but
we did have a chance, Instead, world leaders
chose to squander this precious time when
we might still have saved ourselves and all
future generations, in a useless jockeying for
position,
Thirdly and perhaps most importantly, I
think he would have asked himself why, at
this critical time in history, politicians should
still have felt constrained to hew to the party
line? With nuclear annihilation staring us in
the face, why could not our representatives
in parliament have shown some real leader-
ship?
In the matter of human survival why did
they not put their political affiliations to one
side and more fairly attempt to represent the
people who had elected them to office?

Never before in history had parliamentarians
been entrusted with a more grave responsib-
ility and never before had they failed more
dismally. Being creatures of habit and
tradition they clung desperately and blindly
to a mode of thinking that had become
completely incompatible with the needs of
an atomic age,
While the politicians of the world argued
interminably, the mounting pressures of the
arms race, whether by design or by accident,
exploded without wanting, The unthinkable
had happened! The skies opened in fissioned
death and then dosed forever on all our
hopes; all our dreams; our faith in the
future; our music' and poetry and song, all
the beauty of the world about us that is only
perceptive to human intelligence. Alt this;
gone; in one blinding flash of nuclear hell
that had engulfed the earth,
Yours sincerely,
