Ripley family in Newfoundland
By Ab *yids
Frank and Judy van
Kooten and family, John,
Debbie, and David of Ripley
spent the March winter
break week visiting friends
at the town of Deer Lake in
Newfoundland. Deer Lake is
over two hundred miles
north-east of Corner Brook -
the big pulp and paper cen-
tre in western New
foundland. Last Wednesday
they flew from Toronto air-
port. They expect to return
there today, Wednesday,
March 30.
Don Barnard of Toronto
spent the weekend with his
parents, Mabel and Norm
Barnard in Ripley and at-
tended the Barnard Curling
bonspiel last Saturday in the
Ripley Curling rink. Dinner
guests with Mable and Norm
Barnard were Shirley and
Michael Burnham; Dale,
Ann, and Ellen Rock; and
Gwen Pollock, all of Kincar-
dine and Dawn Carruthers
and son Cole of Ripley.
Mabel and Norm would
like to thank all the ones who
helped in any way with the
bonspiel - the ladies for the
lovely dinner. Also those who
donated prizes for ticket
draws and made this 'spiel a
grand success.
Surprise Party
A potluck dinner party was
held last Sunday evening in
St. Pauls United Church in
Milverton to celebrate the
40th anniversary of the or-
dination of its minister, Rev.
George Ball. For him it was
a real surprise.
Attending from St. An-
drews United Church in
Ripley were Mr. and Mrs.
Gordon Patterson, Mr. and
Mrs. Henry Middlekamp,
Miss Christena Robertson,
Mrs. Rita Irwin, Mrs.
Katherine Irwin, Mrs. Violet
MacKenzie, Mrs. Gladys Ar-
nold, Mr. and Mrs. Robert
Osborne and Kevin. Home
for the occasion were Mr.
and Mrs. David Ball, all of
Metro Toronto. Lorraine
now lives in British Colum-
bia and Gordon is in Ottawa.
Rev. George Ball retires
next June and they will con-
tinue to live in Milverton.
Well known senior citizens
Helen and John MacMurchy,
former residents of the Sixth
Concession West in Huron
Township have recently
moved from their apartment
in Lucknow to Princess
Court in Kincardine.
Last Thursday, March 24
was a nice day outside,
bright sunshine and cold.
The fields were covered with
the fresh white snow which
fell from Sunday to Tuesday
at the start of last week.
However with the bright sun-
shine on Wednesday, the
roads became as bare as
they would be in summer, so
conditions outdoors were
good for the big machinery
disposal sale at the farm of
auctioneer Grant McDonald
on the second concession just
west of Smoky Hollow in
Huron Township. The three
auctioneers in charge of the
sale were Wallace Bullagh of
Teeswater, Brian Rintoul of
Wingham, and Dorne
McLelland of Bervie. They
got it started at 10:30 in the
morning and they had it
finished by three in the after-
noon which was really mov-
ing things. Clerk of the sale
was Gordon Roulston of
Olivet on the 2nd concession
and cashier was George
Powell.
New Store Open
Last Saturday morning,
March 26, Larry and
Beverley Villeneuve opened
their new shop featuring a
display of new and used
clothing for men, ladies, and
children as well as small
tools and appliances. Their
open hours are 10 to 4 on
Mondays to Fridays and 10
to 5 on Saturdays. This shop
is in the former barber shop
just east of the main corner.
Right at this corner Albert
Verheye has the antique
store looking attractive with
the items in a clean orderly
display after weeks of work
the past couple of months.
That makes three business
places in a row counting
these two and the George
and Joy McLean store and
harness shop, all open for
business.
Mr. and Mrs. Larry
Villeneuve recently purchas-
ed the home of Mrs. Donalda
Gossell on the main street
(Huron) south where they
now reside. Larry comes
from Sydenham, just north
of Kingston in Eastern On-
tario and Beverley is native
to this area, coming from
Glammis. This shop makes
the third place to be re-
opened this winter on the
main streets of Ripley. The
first one was the lunch
counter in the former
drugstore and the second one
is the antique store.
This past weekend, March
25-26, Ab Wylds received the
news that Cecil Mooney of
Woodstock had suffered a
severe stroke earlier this
winter. He is presently in
hospital in Florida where he
was spending the winter with
his wife and with his sister,
Mrs. Adeline Martyn of
Ripley. The address of
Adeline is 8901 Blind Pass
Road, Bora Shores, St.
Petersburg, Florida, U.S.A.
33706.
There are still folks here
who remember Cecil as a
young fellow attending the
Ripley Continuation School
and playing on the Ripley
Senior hockey team in this
Northern Hockey League
with teamsfrom Kincardine,
Lucknow, and Wingham.
Then taking his final high
school year in the Wingham
High School, he played for
the Wingham Seniors and in
the game deciding the group
championship he scored six
goals as Wingham defeated
Ripley 7 to 1. By the time this
writer wt -s in university in
London, Cecil was a star
player in the Senior Ontario
Hockey Association and
playing centre on the first
line of the Woodstock Red
Devils. In the early thirties
we remember Cecil playing
for Woodstock in games with
the Western University
Seniors and also with the
London East Seniors.
This past week John
Adams, Earl Kay, and Ken
Hoover of the Kincardine
P.U.C. work crew have been
doing hydro repairs in
Ripley.
Two weeks ago tomorrow
it was Thursday, March 17,
St. Patrick's Day. For that
occasion Mrs. Joy
McLeanplaced her big green
shamrock in the front win-
dow of the harness shop. If
you have not seen it, you still
can as it is there.
MARY EDNA CAMPBELL
Former native of the 4th
Concession west in Huron
Township, Miss Mary Edna
Campbell passed away at
her home in Toronto last
Thursday, March 24, 1983.
Edna is survived by her
brother Clarence of Sudbury
and her sister, Mrs.
Margaret Robinson of
Toronto, also nieces and
nephews. She was
predeceased by her parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Dave Camp-
bell and her brothers Roy
and Harold. The notice was
in The Toronto Star, Satur-
day, March 26 and at that
time the funeral ar-
rangements at the Murray
E. Newbigging Funeral
Home, 733 Mount Pleasant
Rd. at Eglinton Avenue were
incomplete.
After graduation from the
Ripley ContinuationSchool,
Edna became a public school
teacher and came back to
Huron Township where she
was successful. Like so
many others from the Ripley
Huron area she went to
Toronto to complete her
teaching career and retired
there.
Here the Campbell home
farm was Lot 20, Concession
3 and the home was back
sideroad 20 on the opposite
or east side to the Bill Hooey
place where Mr. and Mrs.
Jim Scott now live. Sym-
pathy is extended to the
family at this time of
bereavement.

Lucknow WMS host UCWunit at meeting
The Lucknow Presbyterian
Evening Auxiliary met for
their March meeting in the
church basement with the
evening group of the U.C.W.
as their guests. Mrs. Bill
Henderson welcomed the
ladies and called on Mrs.
Gordon Cayley to present the
program.
Everyone joined in a lively
sing song led by Mrs.
Cayley. Mrs. George Joynt
and Mrs. Bryce Elliott led in
devotions.
Mrs, Michael Sheppard
chose to speak about "Joy"
and pointed out the differ-

ness. She expressed her
deep concern for the young
people of today who need
Jesus in these difficult times,
and shared some of her own
experiences in the develop-
ment of her faith.
Mrs. Jack Treleaven
