weeks, Lynne Nicolson's lit-
tle -item on Remembering, in
last week's issue, make me
remembet:. that, there are
those folks. who really count
en the home town paper and
the local news.
Perhaps Edgar Guest's
poem says it best.
THE HOMETOWN PAPER
It's like a. smiling face,
It's like a voice you long have
known.
You see it in some distant
place
And rush, to claim it as.your
own.
The paper fromyour old
home town
Has bridged the long and
dreary miles
And with it you can settle
down
Among. familiar tears and
smiles.
It speaks of every friend you -
know, ...'
It tells of scenes you yearn to
;see. • r ' -
It brings back joys of long
. ago . 1
And tells of joys that are to
-be. .
And as you run its columns
o'er
Your yesterdays come troop-
ing back.
You:. -fancy you're at home
once ,.nlore
And. golden, seems. the letters
riackt , , .
Its speech is one- you under-
stand•.
It tclis=-,{you grief 1you,.,can

It brings ;your in.,r that distant •

There among scenes . and
faces. strange
The old home paper seems to
The faithful friend that does-
n't change -
A friend that you' are glad to
see.
Several have called asking
why there has been no
Lochalsh news, others form-
ed their own opinions. Mak-
ing excuses is not one of my
best jobs - I put it plain - do
you always report even just
one little item to make the
column possible. If you do,
then its my fault, if you don't
then is your fault.
If the local paper isn't as
good as you think it should
be, then you, the weak link,
should contribute more to it.
Reporters are quitting as
community columnists be-
cause they are not receiving
the co-operation of the pub-
lic, and all reporters are busy
people as all people in the
public life are.
It takes time and energy to
write even, a small column,
not to mention calling every-
one in the community for
news. If you want the local
paper to remain a. local
paper, then you must co-op-
erate in making it just that.
Let us strive to. keep our
community alive, . . by doing
such as Frank and Annie
MacLennan, have. done
having that,lovely sign paint --
ed on their former store,
Loehaish, the tiny service
centre for,, many years past.
The tiny community from
which the mail was delivered
many years ago,. Wonder
how many in the area have
old cards or letters with the
Lochalsh postal stamp on
them.
Doug Martyn is helping
out at th,e Art Helm shop in

Mrs. Emile MacLennan
has- daughter, Marion, form-
erly of Sudbury, visiting with
her and Sandy.
With such a beautiful fall,
corn harvesting, , bean harv-
esting and plowing are being
completed and all should be
ready for winter.
Visiting Mrs. Gordon Fin-
layson during, the past week-
end were . Allan Finlayson
and Mr.. and Mrs. Paul
Emberlin of Toronto.
Those from this area who ,
attended •,and .-enjoyed: the
luncheon and social time
sponsored by the Sanderson
Travel agency, Mr. and Mrs.
Vince Mountford, hosts at
the Legion Hall, Ripley on
Monday last, were Mrs.
Dorothy Finlayson, Mrs.
Florence MacKenzie, Mrs,
Duncan Farrish, and Mr. and
Mrs. Oliver, McCharles.
Mrs. Warren Wylds ° was
hostess to Ashfield Presby-
terian Church W.M.S. meet-
ing on Thursday past. Mrs.
Wm.. Ross. had charge of the
program. The .December
meeting will be,_ held: at the -
home of Mrs. Neil MacKen- _

Donna.: Elphicly spent a
couple of °days in Toronto at

guest with 4-H club leaders
from across Ontario.

school classes in Ripley is
flower arranging with Mrs.

Robb is teaching hand work
and sewing.
Happiness is best attained
by learning to live each day
by itself. The worries are
mostly about yesterday and
to -morrow.
So let us busy our minds
and consider doing some
type of craft such as will be
explained in this column
from week to week.
How about using • some
geraniium_ leaves to form a
canopy., held. in- place in a
small slightly higher contain-
er placed in a lower bowl
type container with flowers -
`areal or artificial; arctiind' the
edge of the lower container. I
love to use real flowers in
this way., and'calrit "Can-
opy',. Place in an entrance
way or on a table if not too
high. Try it, you'll enjoy it
too.
