WHEN JUNK WAS JUNK
AND PRICED ACCORDINGLY
BY HUBER LAWRENCE,
DINGANNON
In the old days, junk was just junk.
And the old junk dealer was a poor man
with a family of half-starved children, 1.
remember one who used to come
around to our house once or twice a year
when I was a boy. He would mend old
pots and pans for a •mere pittance, or
sell you a second-hand chair for a nickel
or a dime.
Not so today. Our modern junk dealer
has raised his status, and in fact, some
of them tower head and shoulders above
the ordinary citizen. We call them
"Antique Dealers", and we almost
envy their ability to "antique",
everything they touch.
Take our nickel and dime chairs for
instance, the ones that were in vogue
when Queen Victoria ascended to the
throne. Today they are worth hundreds
of dollars.
A good example is the churn that
grandrnother made, butter in many
years ago. She worked, it with a foot
pedal, then drained off the rich butter
milk, worked the butter `with a wooden.
paddle in a wooden bowl, and how
delicious it was.
a
Then there are those broadaxesthat
no one knowss how to handle anymore
they hewed many a timber : for both
house and barn,
, Other artifacts are an old' corn.:planter,.
a far ,cry from our modern farm equip
Ment, .and, a one-man crosscut saw. This
old saw might have `been a Muscle -
Wilder, but it was also a back -breaker:
1Gf anyone set out to cut timber with one
of thein, today, he Would be laughed to
scorn, so. they are now used only as
ornaments to adorn fireplaces,
And then there are those antique
horse collars, hames, straps, buckles,
belly bands, whiffle trees, logging
chains, .and stable lanterns.
Talking about stable lanterns reminds
me of the days when we had to do our
barn chores by. their dim light. And
when I think about those dine days, I
rejoice to think that they are making
ornaments out of those' lanterns.
Sometimes I think abouts lie old oak
table that stood in our , dii - i g room
when I was a boy.. Oh, 'f 1 only had it
now. I would dip it, scrap ivand polish
it. Then 1 would sell it to the first lucky
person , who came along with more
money than he knew what to do with.
And what can I say about grandmoth-
er's old rocking chair? The one she
rocked in for her entire married life. To
think that she died without knowing
that it was worth $250, a whole year's
income in those days.
The horse-drawn plough, - what is it
good for? Well, you would be surprised.
I know I was. The old ploughs, hold' up
mail boxes; . flower urns, old tin pails
and milk cans. ,They are also used as
lawn ornaments along with kitchen
sinks, hand- pumps, wash boards.

To the .Editor:
I think it's about that time,
so, herewith is a cheque for
renewal of your paper which
has expanded considerably
in recent months and contin-
ues to beof much interest to
Lucknowites of earlier years.
If you publish this .note, it
may be of interest to Harvey
MacDougall and the mem-
bers of his New Horizon
"Save the Bluebird" group,
that our group in .the Ottawa
River Valley continues to
have fair. success, though
adverse weather conditions
during spring migration have.
taken a considerable toll the
last couple of years.
Results on my own Blue-
bird Trail were less produc-
tive than last year ` but 37
pairs nested, 13 of them
nesting twice, making 50
broods, approximately 230
eggs were laid, of which .1.55
hatched.. As usual, nature
"took ; its toll'-. - predation. of
•
,eggs, young and adults, -nest
expropriation by other spec-
ies, notably tree -swallows,
and some vandalism.
May the Lucknow Sentinel
continue to thrive and keep
ex-Lucknowites in touch.
Sincerely,
Graham MacNay.
