Freeing. himself, Nelson was rapidly
° reducing the distance between himself
and Stanley, when the wife set two
fierce dogs after him. One of these dogs
had the officer by the coattail while the
other furiously attacked his lower litnbs.
Having to beat off the dogs the
' constable gave up the chase and Stanley
made his escape into the woods. About
this time, Officer McClevis returned
and reported finding a log dabin in
which were barrels of "tnash" and a
fully equipped whiskey still. McClevis
had, destroyed the plant and brought
• samples with him: Nelson then set out
for Walkerton taking part of the still,
the samples •and the woman while
McCleyis remained at the house in hope

When S. B. "Steve" Stothers was
called to the mike on Fair Day, he had a
big cigar protruding from his pocket
which reached most to his shoulder and
Tore closely resembled a miniature log.
Steve explained that bis son had
brought it home to him on his return
from is honeymoon and, while Pa
figured he was man enough to master it,
if Steve Jr.. couldn't nevertheless, he
was going to be big hearted and pass it
on to stogy -loving Sam• Sherwood.
`Twan't long till Sam strolled along,
took Steve up on the offer and walked
off serenely befogging the cloudless
atmosphere. It lasted him all day - and
while we haven't seen Sam since, 'Tis
said it didn't get him down.
