The Lucknow Sentinel, 1978-10-04, Page 9Farmers get increase for table rniIk Ontario dairy farmers are to receive a price increase of 77 cents per hundredweight, which is a 5.9 per cent increase, for the milk they produce for table use effect- ive October. 1, 1978. This increase amounts to approx- imately 2c per quart... Since conversion to metric on April 1, 1978, producers are paid in .hectolitre units (100 litres). This increase in metric terms is $1.75 per hectolitre or 13/4 cents per litre. , In announcing the incre- ase, Kenneth G. McKinnon, the Chairman of the Ontario Milk Marketing Board stated that the Board has used an economic formula as a guide in setting the producer price for fluid milk for several years. "Current information," he said, "demonstrates that milk producers'. incomes are lagging and they require an immediate but modest in- crease to help offset cost increases which have occur- red since the last price change in, producer returns for fluid milk on September 16, 1977." In giving some examples of cost increases, Mr. Mc- Kinnon said, 'Building re- pairs are tip by -10.0 per cent; 'electricity by 9.3 per cent; seed by 8.4 per cent; and petroleum products by 4.T per cent. All of these Commodities are used ex- tensively. on dairy farrns." He also pointed out that the increasein the producer price is fully justified under the existing Anti -Inflation Board 'guidelines which the OMMB still operates under. As there js no government regulation controlling the consumer price for milk, the amount of the increase at the retail outlets is dependent on the forces of competition. "For this reason," Mr. McKinnon concluded, "we do not know what the final consumer price increase will be." The $1.75 per hectolitre increase raises the farm price • for raw milk in Southern Ontario from $29.58 per hectolitre to $31.33 per hectolitre and in Northern Ontario from $30.87 to $32.62 per hectolitre. Livestock drug licence applications available Ontarid Agriculture and Food Minister Bill Newman has stated that with the 'regulations 'under The Live- stock Medicines Act coming. into effect on September 19, 1978, approximately 1,000 suppliers of animal health products will require licences to sell their products to livestock owners. The act applies to the sale of livestock and poultry drugs by persons other than pharmacists or veterinarians. ' Mr. Newman said, "The provisions of this act will ensure that drugs are hand- led and stored in an appro- priate manner to maintain their quality. In this way, the new requirements will prot- ect both the livestock produc- er and the consumer!' The Minister said that the Veterinary Services Branch, which administers the act, has mailed copies of the act, the regulations and the application forms to all persons and firms affected by the licencing require- ments. Pharmaceutical com- panies have also been sent copies of the act and regulations. Anyone wishing further information or additional copies of the act, regulations Or application form should get in touch with the supervisor of the act, Dr. L. G.
