BRUCE -GREY Some weeks ago, the Minister of State for Small Business announced a pro- gram known as the Small Business Intern Program. This program is now fully operational across the coun- try. This program is intended to accomplish two extremely important objectives: firstly, to create permanent job op- portunities. for recent gradu- ates, and 'secondly, to en- hance the growth potential and, competitive position of small and medium-sized bus- inesses by helping these firms to hire trained people. The federal government will pay fifty per cent of a selected intern's wages, up to'a maximum of $675.00 per month, for a period not exceeding twelve months. It should be noted that this contribution is not made with respect to a position already filled at the time of the application, nor is it intended to help create summer or other part-time employment. Payments will be made quarterly based on invoices submitted by the company. Any payments under this program beyond March 31, 1979, are subject to avail- ability of federal funds for this purpose.. To be eligible, the com- pany must meet the follow- ing criteria: - have not more than three hundred employees - be incorporated - the new position be addi- tional to the normal work force of the employer - not receive any other sub= sidy for the intern - offer challenging job to the intern - have the potential for prov- iding continuing employment after the termination of this assistance To be eligible for the Internship, a graduate must meet the following criteria: - be a Canadian citizen or a landed immigrant` - h4ve completed the whole of any recognized program of I studies two or more years beyond secondary school - not have worked in the pre- vious six months for the company in which he or she will be employed as an intern - not be related to any mem- ber of the management or owners of the company ' - not be holding any shares of the applicant company company — not be holding any shares. - of they applicant company
