Liked farm experience
Doug Mooney of Toronto
was eager to find summer
employment that would allow
him to work outdoors most of
the time.
And his hopes' were fulfil-
led working on the farm of
Lloyd Graham, of R. R. 1
Lucknow in the Junior agri-
culturist program sponsored
by the Ministry of Agricul-
ture.
Doug, a grade 13 student
at George S. Henry Second-
ary School, Toronto, persued
his penchant for working
outdoors after learning about
the farm experience program
through some friends.
"I would much rather work
outdoors," Doug stated. "I
heard about the program
from some friends so I
thought I'd give it a shot this
summer."
The junior agriculturist
program offers city students
an opportunity to experience
farm life and also provides
farmers with some valuable
farm labour. The ministry
shares the cost of the
program with the farmer,
paying $6 per day in wages to
the student. The farmer
chips in with room and board
and an additional $5 per day
in wages.
This is the third summer
that Lloyd has been involved
in the program and Doug was
pleased that he was able to
work on the Graham farm
since he preferred a mixed
operation.
Farm life was a unique
experience for Doug and one
that he is not likely to forget.
Without any previous farm
work experience he had some
ideas of what to expect but
then again there were many
surprises as well.
"I knew enough to expect
long hard hours of work on
the farm and that it wouldn't
be easy," he admitted. "And
it has been a lot of hard work,
especially digging post holes
and fencing, but I don't mind
it."
It didn't take long to adjust
to' the work schedule but
coming to live in Lucknow,
from the city of Toronto took
some adapting. The lifestyles
are obviously varied but still
dependent on each other.
"There is something to be
said for both styles of life and
I've learned that the city.
depends on the farm," Doug
said. "I met 'several other
farmers in the area and it
was obvious to them that I
was from the city. But
they didn't make a big deal
of it. They were very. direct
and honest people."
Doug began working at the
Graham farm in mid-June
and through the program
was allowed a maximum of
54 working days. For the first
four weeks he worked 12
days and then took two days
off.
Working on the farm Doug
soon discovered that he had
settled into a new routine
geared to the work and life
on the farm. Oh, he was used
to being up early in the
morning, and the work didn't
frighten him but still there
was something completely
different about the way of
life.
"I eat more food now,
probably twice as much but
then I'm working twice as
much as I used to," he
remarked. "And because of
the busy schedule 1 am
happy just to watch a little
television ,at night and go to
bed."
Totally separated from a
farm environment in the city
of Toronto, Doug was rather
surprised to learnhow diver-
sified and knowledgeable
farmers are. He said that
farmers are quickly able to
size up a problem and
remedy it before he could
begin to pinpoint the prob-
lem..
"I had no idea there vias
so much to farming and

farmers have to know so
many things," he said. "It
was a learning experience
and although I won't remem-
ber everthing I learned I
think a change in my attitude
was a big thing."
Doug finished his stint at
the Graham farm last Thurs-
day and now early morning
chores, digging fence posts
on hot afternoons and brand-
ing cattle are just fond
memories.
And although the summer
was worked mainly for exper-
ience since the pay wasn't all
that substantial, when asked
if he would work on a farm
again, Doug replied, "Sure, I
would do it again."
