Betty enjoyed teachin g in Ghana,
people were friendly and helpful
Of all the countries where CUSO sends volunteers, Ghana,
West Africa has the highest number of volunteers extending
their stay because the people are so friendly.
"They are really fine people," sayBetty Colwell, formerly
of Lucknow, who has just returned from two years teaching in
Winneba, Ghana. "They recognize that you are a stranger in
their country and that things are difficult and they are just
trying to help you manage," says Betty.
Winneba is a fishing village of about 30,000 people'situated
on the coast of Wests Africa about 45 kilometres from Accra
which is the capital. The area surrounding Wirmneba is called
coastal Savana.
Betty taught Home Economics , at Stratford Central
Secondary for two years after graduating from university and
college of education beforeleaving for Ghana two years ago.
She taught in Ghana at a teacher training college. Most of
her students were primary teachers who were taking three
year diploma courses to upgrade themselves for secondary
level teaching in Home Science.
Ghana is potentily a rich country says Betty, because they
have many natural resources 'such as hydro -electricity,
timber, gold and cocoa. But the people in government are
more concerned with making money for themselves and
bribery and corruption are the order of the day she points out.
PooL.losed for
chemical
treatment
The present outbreak of sore throats and fever has
prompted the Lucknow Swimming Pool to take a precaution-
ary measure to ensure no infection is contacted at the pool.
The pool will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday evening This
week for disinfecting purposes.
Chemical readings are taken by the health department and
the pool staff every day and there is no indication that there is
anything wrong. The closing is a precaution, only.

The military regime which is in power held a referendum in
March asking the people to choose whether they wanted party
politics or union government, when the military turns the
government over to the civilians.
Tribalism is still very common in Ghana and very often in
party government, one tribe will come to prominence and the
people mistrust the government because all the benefits go to
the tribe in power. No one can explain however, how a union
government is to work. It is "supposed that all tribes would
have representation. But many believe it would be a facade
for the military regime to continue rule.
There was a change in leadership just after Betty left
Ghana and the new leader, who is said to be the power behind
the man previously in power, has said he will hold another
referendum. The people are very pessimistic.
Inflation is another of the problems which keeps Ghana,
although interested in the political problems of other African
countries, more concerned about her own situation. Inflation
is something like 100 per cent. When Betty went to Ghana a
dozen eggs cost $4.40 a dozen and the price had climbed to
$6.06 a dozen in the two years she was there.
Betty's father, Currie Colwell, concession 2, Kinloss, went
to Ghana to visit last Christmas. While he. was there, he and
Betty toured West Africa and travelled north to Mopti and
Timbuktu. They arrived in Mopti about two days after Wally
Houston, of Lucknow, flew home for leave last January.
The people's culture is influenced by the .Arabs because it
is life in the desert. The Tarquary people dress like the Arabs
and live in shelters made of grassmats woven together.
In Winneba many& the dwelling are cement buildings and
here are many of the conveniences of the western world.
Betty lived on the top floor of a house resembling a white
Spanish -style house and the beach she looked out on from her
balcony was much like the tropical beaches of the Caribbean
with white sand and palm trees,
Betty travelled along the ivory coast to Beynin, west of
Wirineba last July and went by canoe throrgh the water
channels into the rain forest area to see a stilt village. The
wooden huts of the natives are built on stilts in the water.
Also called the water village, it is an exception. Catching
parrots, to be sold as pets, was the major industry of the
village and making apeteshie, a local gin was the other.
Betty plans to spend the summer on her father's farm and
then return to Western University in London, this September,
to do • a ' makeup year to qualify for 'a Type A teaching
certificate. She then hopes to find a teaching position and may
find herself in Northern Ontario or, British Columbia.
She was surprised when several people told her they were
so glad to see her home, as if they had worried about her
while she was in Africa. She doesn't understand the concern
because she enjoyed her stay in Ghana immensely.
She says that the most interesting thing she found was the
other young people who were volunteers working in Ghana,
who had also chosen a lifestyle other than marriage and
family following graduation from school.
