The Lucknow Sentinel, 1978-07-26, Page 1Almost 5,000 eome to Lucknow for tractor pull Close to 5,000 people carne to Lucknow on the. weekend to watch the top names compete at the Molson's Points Series Class A Tractor Pull. Billed as thebiggest tractor pull in Western Ontario for this season, pullers came from Michigan, Ohio, the OttaWa Valley and all over Ontario. People were coming into town as early as Tuesday of last week to camp until Saturday for the pull. The pull was sponsored by the Lucknow Tractor Pullers' Association and after expenses the proceeds from the pull will be given to the Lucknow District Community Centre. The Lucknow Association built a track costing $3,500 at the C.N.R. property north of the railway tracks on Havelock Street. The hillside was an excellent "bleachers" for the spectators and there was adequate space behind the track for preparing tractors with separate access from the road. The traffic flowed easily to parking space across from the track area and campers found grounds for camping across the road. The Lions Ladies and the West Huron Junior Farmers provided refreshments from food booths and the Lions Club manned the gates and tended bar at the beer garden. Willard Sellens, Kitchener, announcer for the pull, kept the crowd entertained with his colourful comments. During the tractor pull on Saturday and Sunday several draws were made for merchandise donated for the event by local business men. The winners are Jim Sinnettof Ashfield Township, a three pound fire extinguisher from G & E Sales. An International Harvester Jacket donated by Chuck Becker was won by Joyce S10 •A Year In Advance $14 To U.S.A. and Foreign Adamson of Lucknow. Jack Bird, R. 1 Ariss and Vilmer Gagnier, Tilbury each won a" case of B.P. oil donated by Whitechurch Sand and Gravel. From. Ideal Supply there were two cases of Kendal oil; one each to Doug Howatt, Belgrave and Mrs. Hilke Dan, Stratford. Also from Ideal `Supply were two cases of grease which were won by Ken Schmidt, Kitchener and Dave Feltz, Mitchell. The winner of the case of Sunoco grease donated by Chisholm Fuels is Bruce Willits. The Lucknow Tractor Pullers Association would like to thank these business men for their donations which helped to make it, a success. COMPETITOR'S STANDINGS AND PICTURE INTO "TODAY'S CENTRESPREAD ON PAGES 14-15 WEDNESDAY, JULY 26, 1978 Single Copy 25c 28 PAGES Lucknow's 8th Craft Festival this weekend The Lucknow Agricultural, Society is staging their eighth annual Craft Festival this weekend at the Lucknow Arena. Some of the exhibitors will be setting up their displays after 3 p.m. on Thursday and the Festival will be open to the public on Friday from 12 noon to 10 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to -5 p.m. - The Festival features a wide variety of crafts for sale: jewellery, candles, woodwork, dolls, .puppets, ' maple products, pottery, petit point, flowers,. crocheting, knitting, cermaics, cushions, silkscreening, quilts, apple dolls, leather goods, wicker baskets, macrame, china painting, Japanese punch embroider, and copper tooling. Many of the craftsmen will be demonstrating their craft during the show and a special demonstration of spinning and weaving from wool will be given by Elizabeth Hoey of Hoey Farm Studio, Guelph. All available space and tables have been booked for the two day event. - Many of the craftsmen have donated an item for the free draws that are to be held every hour and this year, President, Russel Irvin of the Agricultural Society has donated two market pigs for the major draw. 'Tickets are being sold for the • four"draws ch winner to receive one-half pig. All proceeds from this d ill go to the Lucknow and District Community Centre. The Kairshea and Holyrood Women's Institutes will be in charge of serving meals. The Festival will wind up its festivities with a dance in the Community Centre on Saturday evening with music provided by Wilbee's Orchestra... The Agricultural Society has made plans for 'a midway at Caledonian Park on. Friday and Saturday. A popsicle and a cold drink were two ways t� beat the heat on Saturday .and a cool swim was another..These little girls took advantage of all three on Saturday when the Lucnow District Swimming foot swim instructors hosted it picnic for the students in their July classes and their families. ParentsJoined their children for a swim and then enjoyed barbecued, hot dogs and poptdcles for dessert.
