This Week in Ripley

Despite earlier forecasts of
inclement weather, it was nice
last week, This brought the
farmers out onto the land for
spring work and tractors could be
heard and seen working the
fields. On Wednesday the few
silver or soft maple trees in Ripley
were out in full blossom. Howev-
er, again on the nights of the past
weekend it was cold enough to
form ice on water outside.
Monday, May 1st sand outside it
is white with snow.
On Wednesday afternoon Rev.
Gerald Paul of Kincardine United
Church took the service for the
late Carl Pollock. Carl was born
on August 3, 1909, in Huron
Township and passed away in
Fort Lauderdale on Sunday, April
23, 1978 while on a short vacation
in Florida. Sympathy goes to his
wife Jean, son Douglas of Bur-
lingtonnd daughters Anne
(Mrs. Peter Astles) of Blind River
and Joan (Mrs. Bill Ritchie) of
Kincardine, and his sister, Marie,
of Clinton, brothers, Carmen, of
Ottawa, Howard of Toronto and
Gurney , of England.
On Thursday afternoon Rev.
Bob Putman of Reid's Corners
(Pine River and Bethel churches)
took ,the service for the late Roy
Btown,( native of the Point clark
area, se and concession west. He
passed away in Oshawa on
Tuesday in his 72nd year. He is
survived by a sister, Mrs. Sylvia
Weber ,of Waterloo, and a,
brother, Carlyle of Barrie. Sym-
pathy is extended to the members
of the Brown family at this time of
bereavement. 1
Ronnie and Robert Rock of
Ripley raked the road shoulders
of Gore -Park. This included the
gravel deposited by ,last winter's
snow plowing. This was a rather
difficult job'. as ' the ,,gravel was
mixed with other debris.
On Tuesday of last week Mrs.
Niels Frederiksen who had been
a patient in Kincardine and
District Hospital, returned to her
home • on Malcolm - Street. Nora
expects to take further tests and
treatment this week in Toronto.
11,edvers Johnson has improved
his home in the north end of the
village by the addition of exterior
white siding. The . job was
completed by Al Parkhouse of
Atwood who has been doing this
type, of work for the past twenty

GRADUATION PICTURES
On Thursday, April 27th,
graduation pictures were taken at
R.D.S. Individual and group
pictures were taken of the Grade
12 and 13 classes and a group
picture was taken of the Grade
Eight students.
BL4 TABLE TENNIS`
TOURNAMENT
On Friday, April 28th, R.D.S.
participated 1 I a table tennis
tournament in Kincardine. Those
who represented R.D.S. were
Robert Regier, Chris McGarvey,
Jamie Gallant, Robbie Sutton,
Erroll Lundy, Robbie Lee, John
McIntosh and Helene Peet. Jamie
Gallant and Robbie Sutton won
consolation prize in their division.
VARIETY CONCERT
Everyone is busy practicing for
the Variety Concert at noon and
after • school. The glee club and
mass choir practices also 'began
last week. The R.D.S: Variety
Concert willbe held on May 18th
and 19th. See you then!
Leaders John Hawrylyshyn of
the sixth concession east in Huron
Township reports that during the
month of April the Ripley Scouts;
Guides, Brownies, Cubs and
Beavers enjoyed an afternoon at
the Kincardine Swimming Pool.
Also the Cubs visited CKNX in
Wingham. Leader Wilfred Gam-
ble of Ripley took the boys to visit
Jim Needham's dairy farm on the
tenth concession, while leader G.
Van Horne took the Scouts to
Chesley Lake for an outing. With
all this activity, leader Frank van
Kooten's paper drive has been
delayed but will still be held in a
few weeks.
NormanSchmidt of Walkerton
visited in Ripley last ' Thursday
afternoon. Norman is well known
in the Ripley Huron area.
Ralph Grubb of Ripley is at the
Harold Courtney seed cleaning
plant in Ripley. With spring here
fertilizer, grain seed and machin-
ery are all moving.
Miss Maureen Kerr of Toronto
spent the weekend with Mrs. Paul
Greenwood, in Ripley.
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Ramsay of
Kincardine were at their Ripley
home last Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. George Colwell
of Lucknow visited on Sunday
with Mrs.° Gladys Mason.
Stewart Needham and Mrs.
Sam Geddes are patients in
Kincardine and District Hospital.
Mr. and Mrs. Archie Hamilton
of Goderieh visited last Wednes-
day with Mr. and Mrs. Sana,
Emerson.
Mrs. Isabel Martyn moved to
her home at Wickams Grove,.
north of Kincardine.
A big crowd from the Ripley
area attended the presentation for
Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Eadie of
Holyrood.
Mr. and Mrs. Donald A. Bell of
Metro : Toronto were at their
Ripley home last weekend. ,
Mr. and Mrs. Ian MacDonald
(the former Jean MacTavish)
have moved into their new home
on William Street,
The St. Andrew's United
Church Women served the dinner
to the Ripley and District Lions
Club last Wednesday evening.
Over 100 attended.
Mrs, Jim Napper and Mrs.
Rebecca Hossfeld of Walkerton
and Mrs. Gary Napper _ and
Tracey, Jodi of Cargill visited last
Saturday with Mrs. Donald Gos-
sell in Ripley.
Visiting on the weekend with
Mr. and Mrs. Norm Barnard for a
family dinner were Mr. Don
Barnard of Toronto, Mr. and
Mrs. Garry Carruthers of London,
Mr. and Mrs. Michael 'Burnham,'
Ann and Shannon Burnham and
Mr. Dale Rock, all of Kincardine.
Also Mr. Joe Burnham of
Kincardine visited briefly.

Bill Robinson was master of
cereinonies for the annual Ripley -
Huron Minor Hockey banquet
which was held in the Complex
auditorium, with about 290 play-
ers, fathers and mothers present.
Murray Culbert thanked the
ladies for the' delicious dinner,
and the head table guests made a
few remarks.
Bill Elliott, chairman for Satur-
day morning hockey said that
there will be changes made for
the coming season. Mike Snobel-
en, Reeve of Huron Township,
brought greetings from Huron
Township, - and stated that the
teams were being good ambassa-
dors for the area. Bill Tranter,
Reeve of Ripley, -congratulated all
the teams who participated, while
Allan Gamble, chairman of the
Ripley Recreation Committee,
said that each team had won a
trophy, one called Responsibility.
John Kelly, chairman of Minor
Hockey, thanked the individual
teams and coaches, Ralph and
Helen Grubb, and all the chair\
men involved. He had a special
thanks for the ladies who worked
so hard to keep the booth running

different teams. House League,

Dahmer. Tyke, donated by Gord-
on Elliott, presented by Ken
Farrell, was won by Jeff Verbeek.
Atom, donated by Bob Gibbons,
presented by Murray Thompson,
was won by Randy Collins. This is
the ° second time Randy has won
the most improved player award.
Pee Wee, donated and presented °
by Bill Kempton, went to Joe
Nugent. Bantam, donated and
presented by Wayne Lowry, went
to Brent Hodge, Midget, donated
by Dave Morrise5 Barn Paints,
and presented by Nancy Regier,
went to Brent Coiling. Juvenile,

"Call me Coach", a film on
hockey coaching was presented,
with Doug Coulfes running the

A CAMPING WE WILL GO
On May 10th to 12th, Mrs. J.
MacDonald's Grade 5 class- is
going to go camping at the
Wiarton Outdoor Education Cen-
tre.' The trip will consist of wood
carving, eating, hikes,- nature
studies, moonlight campfires and
sleep. When we get back, we will
tell you about our trip.
