On March 3 Lucknow Midgets
travelled to Smithville, east of
Hamilton for'the first game of the
O.H.H.A. quarter finals. The
Lucknow squad suffered their
first shut out defeat of the season,
being on the low end of a ` 4-0
score. The combination of slow
ice and the inability to find their
skating legs added to the frustra-
tion around the net.
On Sunday, March 5 the
Smithville squad', returned to
Lticknow" and took away a 4-3
victory. With Lucknow leading
3-2 going into the third period,
Smithville slew cl„ some strong
goal tending' and consistant
shooting and skating to grab the
victory, even though, they were
out shot 13-6 in the third period.
The manager, Calvin 'McClen-
aghan, and coach, Ken Houston,
would like to thank the parents for
their moral and car pool support,
Lynne Elphick for press report-
ing, the people . for running the
clock and score sheet and Bill
Hunter for his . guidance in our. .._
firstiear.
Last but not least the players
for their entertainment on and off
the ice. .
Lancers trounce Royals
Meet Pt. Elgin next
BY HARVEY LIVINGSTON
Last week saw the Lucknow
Lancers win the quarter_ftnals
ON er Wingham Royals, four
games straight.
Wednesday night in Lucknow,.
fans were treated to a hard, fast
skating game of hockey. The 'first
period 'saw the Royals take a 2-1
load. The Lancers took over the
second period and went ahead
with a 5-4 lead: The third period
was dominated by Lucknow, with
Wingham in there fighting all the
way. Final score Lucknow 8,
Wingham 5.
On Friday, the Lancers' travel-'
led to Wingham to win their third
game 7-3. Moth teams were out to
win this game. If the Royals lost,
their -backs were really against
the wall for them to come back
four straight to win the series.
With ,two games in their favour
apd positive thinking, the Lancers
took'to the ice and ended the first
period with a 4-2 lead. The second
period ended 6-3; final score 7-3.
Saturday saw the home town
boys In Wingham again. This
being ~the fourth game in seven
days for these two teams and the
fact that Wingham was down
three, did not produce the type of
game, expected for playoff series.
The Lancers were ,happy to play
as easy a game as this one turned
out to be., It left the team in good
shape with no injuries to move on
to their semi final series with Port
Elgin. ,Final, score Lucknow 9,
Wingham
Dave Riggin from Kincardine,
the goalie for this series was a
new face on the Lancers team. He
started the season with. Goderich
and asked for his release to play
with Lucknow. The addition ° of
Riggin to the team has certainly
been an asset.
The Lancers scored a total of 32
goals with 49 assists against the
Royals. Total points for players
will be given following playoffs.
- " Thanks to the travelling fans
who gave their whop hearted
support.
The Port Elgin series will start
this week; see advertisement
elsewhere in this paper.
