In his remarks to 'the meeting,
president, Austin Martin, said
that it is the plan of the
Co-operative's expansion pro,_
gram to make 'the Lucknow
District Co-op more successful
and to maintain the co-operative
as an important part of this
community.
"By working together, we can
continue to grow and expand,"
said Austin, "It's our co-operat-
ive." '
Martin said that the expansion
program in the area includes the
proposed relocation of the Luck-
now store. Originally, the U.C.O.
wasinterested in establishing a
grain drying, feed mill and.
elevator service' on the George
Moore property, east of Lucknow.
Had U.C.O. chosen this site for
the elevator service, the new
store would have been located
there. U.C.O. decided however,
to Build the elevator service on
property they owned near Wing -
ham and the Lucknow District
Co-operative purchased the Lorne
Hackett property on County Road
25, south of Lucknow, across from
Helm Welding -Ltd. Martin said
that the plans are now being
drawn up. by U.C.O. engineers.
John Black, U.C.O. Zone 5
director, said that the past year
had not been as successful
financially as anticipated because
the savings were down even
though the volume of business
had increased. Competitive prices
and rising operating costs had
resulted in a lower profit margin

added that U.C.O. had
11idgeted-for an improvement in
this situation in 1978 and the feed
mill - .gain drying. complex in the
Wingham area would proceed
with construction when he bal-
ance sheet was in such a position
whereby equity had improved.
Nelson Hill, manager of the
Lucknow District Co-operative
said that the local Co-op would be
operating out of the present
location through the coming year
and that the store has a good
inventory even though it may not
all be on display because of the
limited space.
The emphasis in the . coming
year will be on promotion he said,
and he promised competitive
prices and no extreme fluctua-
tions in protein supplements as in
1976.
Because of agreements be-
tween the federal and provincial
governments, the cost of petrole-
um products is: slated to rise each
six months. Hill pointed out that
despite this increase, the share
that the • Co-operative receives
from the price paid by the farmer
has not increased.
Fertilizers are . the biggest
share of the service the co-opera-
tive supplies to their customers
said Hill and he advised farmers
to order early because'the Co-op
is going to tie under a great
pressure to get • it delivered
because the farmers were not
able to get onto the field last year
because it was so wet. He said
that the staff at the. Lucknow
•Co-op will be making every effort
to keep up their standard of
service.
Stuart Lockhart who represent-
ed , U.C.O. Group 2 told, the
meeting that the farmers are to be
congratulated for the success of
their business other than their
farm business, ' their Co-opera-
tive.
