Merry Christmas
Celebrating God's communication
by Rev. Peggy Kinsman,
Lucknow and South Kinloss
Presbyterian Churches
Merry Christmas someone says. Merry Christmas
you say in return . maybe to someone wit(, whom you
would not normally exchange such greetings any other
time of the year.
Merry Chnstmas! people say, not only in person hut
by card and letter and by telephone. Why this year you
may even receive such greetings through E-mail or via
the Internet. Christmas is a time to communicate, for
many of us, a time like no other. Has it really been a
year since we last heard from them'' Has it really been a
year since they last heard from us?
At Christmas we remember and celebrate that God
has and continues to communicate with us. In particular,
we celebrate God's communication with us through the
Christ Child horn long ago in a Bethlehem stable.
Before that birth took place, there was flurry of commu-
nication Angels were kept busy delivering messages to
a young couple named Mary and Joseph, to shepherds
and angels, and even to an old man named Zechariah.
In the Christmas story, we're told how an angel of
God came to Joseph in a dream. Among other things,
the angel told Joseph not to worry about choosing a
name for the child to he born. Emmanuel, which means
God -with -us, would he the child's name. That name
reminds us forever that God has communicated with us
in a very special way.
This year, as we communicate with one and other
sharing our Christmas greetings, let us remember, give
thanks, and celebrate the God who has communicated
with us in a way far more mysterious and profound than
any message from Cyberspace. God continues to com-
municate with us each time our hearts listen to the
Christmas story.
May Emmanuel, God -with -us, he at the heart of all
our communications with one and other during this
Christmas season and throughout the year ahead. Join
with friends and family this Christmas to he reminded
once again how God communicates a message of hope,
peace, joy and love.
