Janet Amos has
lntormcd the Blyth
-.i-esttval Board of
Directors that 1997 will
he her last season as ;mis-
t], director
Amo returned to the
Festival in late 1993 when
it faced financial collapse
under an accumulated
operating deficit of
$'_29.010 Since then. the
deficit has been replaced
by a S91.000 accumulated
surplus. a capital reserve
fund of $72.(X%) has been
plot in place and the
Festivals mortgage has
heen'redueed by $85.316.
"1 kr)ev, it would take
three years to rebuild the
Blyth Festival," Amos
said in her letter to the
!estival Board. "To do
this I relied heavily
on old friends and
associates of the
Festival. Directors.
designers, play -
w nghts and techni-
cians have all
worked hard to
rebuild the treatise

atre."
By the time Amos
leaves after the 1997 sea-
son, she will have guided
the Festival through nine
of its 23 seasons. She was
also artistic director from
the 19150 through 1984
seasons. Those have been
soros of the most success-
ful seasons of the festivals
energy she has given to
rebuild the Festival, she
couldn't be expected to
go on forever.
There was probably
no one else who
could have worked
the miracle of
bringing the
Festival back from
sickness to health.

history, both artistically
and financially, said Keith
Roulston, president of the
Board of Directors.
• "We regret to learn of
Janet's decision but we
know that with the
tremendous amount of
energy and her vision for
the Festival," said
Roulston.
Amos said that she kit
nciw was the time to leave
because the Festival cur-
rently has strength in so
many areas. She cited the
administrative staff under
general manager Karen
Stewart, and the new
energy at the hoard level.
Roulston announced
that the board of directors
has launched a search for
Amos's replacement.
Applications will he
accepted by the search
committee until Dec. 31.
As in the Blyth tradi-
tion, it is hoped the artis-
tic Director designate will
he in place by late May so
he or she can work with
Amos through the coming
season to experience the
unique problems and joys
of mounting a season of
new Canadian work in a
repertory system.
