He really is one smart cookie. Although, an earlier present was sup- posed to mark this occasion, he sur- prised me by offering further gifts - one of romantic thoughts and one of practi- cality. A large bouquet delivered to my office and quickly lifted my spirits which are usually at a low after the paper has gone to press. The second he delivered himself that evening. It was wrapped in newspaper (how suitable) and from the size, shape and weight of the box 1 offered guess that it was a box of chocolate turtles, one of my favorite weaknesses. What was hiding under the newspa- per was a 43 piece set of tools (for want of a better word). I chuckled out loud. 1 guess he had been hearing or reading about my complaining that I never had the 'right tools when I decided to play Mrs. Fixit. So now 1 am the proud owner ofa ratchet set, with nine differ- ent, screw driver ends, nine different sockets, a host of wee screwdrivers for' fine work, a set of allan keys, and pli- of fresh flowers was ers. And it is all encased in a wonderful black leather case! - You may recall that 1 was complain- ing in an earlier column about not being able to find all his electric tools and figureuow to use them. Well, gradually, he' is digging them up and giving me some instruction on their safe use. Yes, Mr''Fixit is sure earning "brownie ants." already had a mini -tool box with an assortment of screw- drivers, wrenches, nails etc., but for some rea- son every time I go to it, MY tools are missing, and I know the cat has no use for them. As my collection is now growing, 1 think for Christmas I'm going to ask for one of those super duper, tall, red tool boxes on wheels with a LOCK. Here's a bit of trivia for you. The word "Xmas" is criticized by some because it leaves "Christ" out of "Christmas." However, it apparently has a respectable meaning. "Xmas" dates back to the 16th century. "X" is the, first letter in the Greek spelling of "Christos" which is "Christ." Add "mas" and you have "Xmas," pro- nounced "kris-mas" or "ex-mas."
