They're hoping some
"masked bandits" will
take the bait in Huron
County.
The Ministry of
Natural Resources will
be flying over parts of
Huron County, dropping
85,000 raccoon baits
between Aug. 19 and 21,
Areas for the drop
include the townships of
Grey, Morris, East
Wawanosh, Stanley and
parts of Tuckersmith and
Goderich.
The baits are being
used to see Whether or
not raccoons will eat
them. The Kugust drop
will be compared to
another in the fall to see
what time of year more
of the baits are eaten.
The work is an effort
to combat the potential
threat of a raccoon rabies
bait for
that is spreading throtugh
parts of the United Stats
bordering Ontario.
"Unfortunately, at this
inoment we don't havita)
vaccine for raccoons,"
said ,Dr. Charlie
KacInnes of the Rabies
Research Unit in the
Toronto area.
There is a vaccine
being tested in the States
but Dr. MacInnes said the
cost to purchase it is too
high. Instead, he said a
vaccine is in develop-
ment in Canada that
would be available for a
third of the cost.
The baits being
dropped in this area will
contain the traditional
fox vaccine.To help thein
in their raccoon research,
the baits also contain
tetracycline which allows
researchers to know
.levilether:or wit a raccoon
has eaten #alalaait.
Area trapOers, who
Chave been working with
the rabies vaccine pro-
gram with fortes since
1975, willsend the heads
of raccoons -caught in
their traps: to the research
unit.
Dr. MacInnes said a
sliver is taken from the
raccoon's tooth and is
examined under an ultra-
violet light. If the rac-
coon has eaten the bait,
the tetracycline, shows up
as a bright green line in
the tooth sliver.
Because of their long
history with trappers in
the Huron County area,
Mr. MacInnek said it's
the best region to
research the raccoon
baits.
Trappers, working
Huron and Perth health
services to join forces
Public health services in Huron and
Perth counties will be managed by one
health unit by September 1997.
On Friday, ,the Perth Disrict Health
'Unit and the Huron County Health
Unit announced they will merge their
services. A merger steering committee
will be established to determine its
structure.
"Our boards decided to initiate 'a
merger M Perth and Huron. This will
achieve savings, integrate services and
guarantee the continuation Of health
services;" said Katherine Rae, chair-
person of the Perth District Health
Unit and Stratford city councillor.
• Ron Murray, chairperson of the
Huron County Health Unit, said ser-
vices will continue to be. offered out of
the existing Clinton and 8tratford
offices.
Savings are expected from the elim-
ination of one board, reducing senior
administration and by sharing services
of specialized personnel, such as an
epidemelogist. Also, alarger health
unit is expected to increase its buying
power.
The merger will help the two health*
units deal with the expect 15 per .cent
cuts in government funding, said Rae.
The merging of Huron and Perth
was a natural" decision, according to
the two chairs.
"The natural place for, Huron has
always been with Perth. We already do
partnerships with Perth," said Murray.
The Huron County Health Unit was
discussing merger with the Lambton
County Health Unit. The Perth District
Health Unit was also considering
amalgamation with the Oxford County
Health Unit.
Employees were informed of the
decision on Friday morning. Murray
said the health units intend on address-
ing the change with staff in a fair and
open manner.
