Wingham and District
Hospital's board of gov-
ernors has approved a
$400,000 capital project
to see the operating room
and intensive care unit .at
the hospital renovated
and updated.
In approving the pro-
ject, the board was acting
on a •recommendation of
the resource committee.:
put .forward at a recent.
special session.
The architectural firm
of Garwood -Jones and
Hananm of Hamilton has
been retained to draw up
plans for the renovation.
The money will ,corne
from the hospital's .,own
capital fund. Once the
tendering :process has
been completed, Lloyd
Koch, hospital executive
director, said. he is hope-
ful that construction ' may.
begin by the end of
October. .
Originally, the board
had looked at renovating
the hospital's obstetrics
department as well, but
that .project has been put
on hold.
Blood clinic
Due to a serious lack
Of blood, the Red Cross
lhas. asked -that a special
blood donor clinic be
held in gingham on
Aug. 22.
As in past years,. it will
beheld at the RE.. Madill.
Secondary 'School, but
this time to the sma11:
gymnasium rather .than
the double gym.
The Red Cross is hop-
ing that 130 units of
blood will be collected at.
the clinic, which runs
from5to9pm.
In the blood donor
clinic held in". Marek at
Mdzlf,. the number of
units of blood collected
was down from other
years as high school stu-
dents were ineligible to
give blood because insuf-
ficient time bad elapsed
since, they had received
their measles vaccina-
tions. It is hoped that
many of those students
will attend this .clinic, as
well as: Members .of the
public.

The Mid -Duron
Landfill Site (MULS)
board has made 'arrange-
ments to have its 'ground-
water testing done by ,a
private lab since the
recent. announcement of
government lab closures.
After discussion and
comparison of costs at its
Jul 18 meeting,
the
board agreed to hire the
services of Lakefield
Research Ltd. to test the ,
groundwater from the
Holmesville site three
times a year as required
by the Ministry of
Energy and Environment.
Goderich Pollution
Control Plant Supervisor ,
Duane Forth told board
members that Lakefield
charged only about two-
thirds .the cost for testing.
And that it's a large com-
pany. "It's a 24 -hour -a -
da y , seven day a week
ope `ation.

New Leachate Strainer
After comparing costs
for a new, 1eachate: strain-
erer
for ' unloading atthe
leachate holding facility
in' Goderich, it Was
decided -by the M111;S
board that site supervisor
Postl should arrange to
have a ' company mann-
facture one.
Prices for pre -built
varieties ran from over
$1,500 to almost :$2,800:
It was ,the feeling. of the
board that one (or two)
could be built for less
cost.
The Pipe itself is. made
of carbon 'steel and the:

less steel: "If a custom
built .one .. meets -the
