by John Greig
Dr. J. M. Shubat hasbeen acquitted on appeal of
failing to report a case of child abuse.
Shubat was acquitted by Judge R. G.E. Hunter on
June 27 after the appeal. The doctor had been found
guilty March 29 by a Justice of the Peace.
Hunter said in a six-page. decision that, "I am sat-
isfied that the J.P. erred in leer conclusion that the
authority to delegate the responsibility of notifying
the 'CAS (Children's Aid Society) did not exist. It
matters not who made the phone call so long as it is
made."
The decision focused on the definition of 'forth-

Preliminary talks con-
tinue on sharing services
between the four local
municipalities.
Reeve Stuart Reavie
says the talks are being
held to determine what
"our common interests

keeps sending us these

Reavie said it's hard
to find a lot of savings

Street work continues to drag on.
by Pat Livingston
There's no definite
date yet when the last lift
of pavement willbe
applied to Lucknow's ,
main street. Reeve Stuart
Reavie is hoping for the
end of July. "I haven't
been able to get an
answer. They put that
new plant in just, north of
town and are experienc-
ing afew probletns."
The new light stan-
dards that were to be
installed oh the main
street had to be returned
due to a manufacturer's
defect. " Three , were
installed in the vicinity of
the sports oemplex and it
wastet long before town
employees noticed the
paint was chipping.
"That manufacturer is
in the middle of changing
plants," said Reavie, "so
it looks like it will be the
end of'the July, begin-
ning of August before
they are returned."
Reavie says there . is
still some ."fine -timing"
to be done on the inter-
locking brick as well.
Residents will have.
noticed that the old ice,
surface (used for park-
ing) has been removed.
"We !las
we were

depends on the budget..
Insurance
Increased liability
claims throughout the
province have resulted in
that cost being passed on
to municipalities.
The village premium,
through Prank Cowan
insurance, came in 28 per
cent higher this year
($28,8'50).:Reavie says
the biggest 'contributor to
a.,
the inease';was the larg-
er
er .number of liability
cases.
"We checked it out. It
seemed like an awful
increase. The ,only other
carrier that's really into -
municipal business is
ROMA and they came
back at $30,000.
The insurance on the
sports complex building
was approved at the,
April meeting. The ,cost
for -that package was
$5,633 with a $1,000
deductible.
