In this frame of mind, they may tend to forget some of the safety rules instilled in them by par- ents and teachers. Please drive safely and watch for these youngsters. There will be many more on the streets during the next two months. And to you students, have a great somrner, but please remember to play safely. To you older stu- dents who are in the party mode', please remember don't drink and drive!; don't getin a: vehicle with -an impaired driver; arrange for a designated driver before you leave home. If you are caught in asituation call your, parents, an aunt, an uncle, a grand- parent, a friend - anyone, but don't drink and drive, or get in a vehicle with someone who shouldn't be driving, Let's all have a safe summer.. Happy columnistsday! To what do you associate the month of June? The first day of summer, Father's Day and the school holidays would probably .be three of the most common answers. However, a little piece f paper crossed my desk recently and the sixth month of the year has offi- cially or unofficially 13 specially designated days and 13 specially designat- ed weeks. Whoa, you say there's only four wee it the month. Right, but those designated weeks double and triple up obviously. Did you celebrate Neighborhood Party Day, Farmers' Day, Tax, Freedom Day? Did you recognize Fit Week, Little League Baseball Week, Sun Awareness Week, Environment Week, or Teacher `Thank -You' Week? The nearest and dearest to my heart is Columnists' Day June 28.. Now T wonder what some of those more famous columnists will be doing on Friday. How will Rosie DiManno, Diane Francis, Barbara. Amiel,. Fotheringham, Richard Gwyn, . and Ellie Tesher celebrate their specially cs' hi designated day? Probably by sitting at their computer and pecking out another column that will have their readers both loving and hating them. If you're a reg- , ular reader of columnists you,' like myself, have' either said, "Right on" or "what a pile of manure" when you've finished reading those columns. Writing a column on a regular basis can be a nightmare. There are times, while sitting at the keyboard, the thoughts and words simply don't gel. On Friday, this columnist is going to try' and find the time to scan over 300 of her meagre offerings and determine just how tall her pile of manure is! To all my fellow columnists - try and have a happy Friday whether you're puffed up from ,kudos or pulling those razor sharp barbs from your butt! It's not a bed or roes, but it's close snit! (Pat Livingston photo) The story behind the word lynch vti to lynch some- one means to kill them,, usually by hanging, with- out due process of law. Lynch law is mob, law, practiced by private indi- viduals, not law officers, and followed by summa- ry execution. There are two possible attributions for the word lynch. The More . usually accepted explanation is that these habits are named after a planter in 'Virginia called -Charles Lynch (1736-- 96), 1736-96), who was a justice of the peace and .presided over illegal trials of Tories during , the American Revolution. An alternative proposal is that there was a James Lynch who was mayor of Galway in Irelandin the 15th century, and that it was his behavior that brought the word into the language. The practice of lynching • was popular in the .more lawless parts of the American West in the 19th century, and even into the 20th century, although it has lapsed into disuse now. 'S. N, fI 70 years ago July 1, 1926 o truth in reports - To the public * In view of certain rumors being circulated to the effect that the surrounding country will be shut off from Lucknow while the street paving is under way, I wish to state that all such reports are entirely without foundation in fact. At all times while paving is being laid, suitable and convenient detours will be ainrariged and while some inconvenience will be unavoidable everything possible will, be done to accommodate the public. Five-day heat wave - The last five days of June gave this district its first taste this season of withering heat, which reached a peak on Sunday With a temperature of 89 degrees. Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday the thermometer stood at 82, 88, 86 and 85. The humidity associated with this first spell of hot weather made it very oppressive. A cool wave fol- lowed a heavy rain on Monday and temperatures dropped to a chilly 43 degrees. Rainfall in June as about normal - slightly over two inches.
