The Lucknow Sentinel, 1996-06-19, Page 5Erie low Sentinel, Wednesday, June 11 by M rzi+ Apaloni In this environment of deficit reduction all govern- ment services are under scrutiny, particularly services such as public libraries. Libraries compete for the. same tai;dollarthat paves the road, provides, health care, and puts ice in the hockey arena.; Yet, unlike many other services, a greater cro section of the community uses the library more than. any other service. In Bruce County alone over 25,090 individuals are registered members of the Bruce County Public Library. That is approximately 40 per cent of the pop- ulation of the County of Bruce: 'Libraries and... librarians have a tendency to be somewhat •modest when it comes to extolling the virtues of a library. And it has become even more dif- ficult to promote libraries with budget and service cuts. The answer can be a "Friends of the Library Group." Friends are a necessary part of life, for institutions as well as people. Support and recognition are impor- tant rnportant elements of any friendship. Friends of the library can and should supply these necessities to libraries while they represent the library to the community. The potential• effectiveness of a group of citizens with no vested interest cannot be overestimated.' The library, which is often taken for granted, can multiply its support in the community if it is willing to estab- lish and perpetuate a `friends' organization. The economy and changes in public attitudes toward government spending have broughtintense pressures to bear upon library budgets. In many cases, friends of the library, by raising funds from private sources or by providing volunteer labor, have made it possible to continue services that would otherwise have been terminated. The initial reasons for having a supportgroup dif- fer but generally include • Money - `Friends' have traditionally raised funds for projects 'or acquisitions in excess-' of the'°general library budget. • Services . Warden Stuart Reavie set up •a donation jar at the picnic that was held the day before the June session, and again during the lunch break of the meeting held at the Lucknow Community Centre. His goal was to collect enough money to send two children in the care of the Children's Aid Society to camp. By the end of the day, contribu- tions from councillors met Reavie's goal of - $400 with fifteen cents to spare. As•with the mist community groups, a constitution and by-laws are established. A `friends' organization can provide an opportuni- ty for individuals to make a recognizable contribution to their community and to their own self-esteem. It provides an outlet for those who wish to be of service, Nice, for those who wish to polish job skills for re-entry into the working world, for retired citizens, and for the public's relations to the library: The library is using the community to help itself. Would you like to do something that would benefit your community? Would you like to help library ser- vice, develop in your community? Do you feel libraries are important in your community?
