The year is coming to
aclose, and the Grade 8
students are beginning to
think about graduation,
which takes place on
June 24. A yearbook is
underway, with pictures,
memories ofthe years at
Brookside, and plans for
the, future. This time is
sial to our grads., Like
many rural schools, they
will split up and go to
two different schools
depending on where they
live. Although .: new
friends will • be made,
that's hard on friendships
that have lasted for many
years!

UCS' Unit 1 met at Ella Hackett s
on June 4 with 13 members present. .
Jean MacLeod and Lois Goodhue were
in charge of the program, and Jean
ConleyP JJye'd the auto harp for the
hymns. Mrs. MacLeod ,opened with a
poem A Dandy Church,
The theme of the meeting was
Mission and Service. Mrs. Goodhue
read the scripture and Mrs. MacLeod
gave the meditation on stewardship:
"Are we as Stewards worthy of the
trust ',given. us?" Mrs. Goodhue read
"God so loved •the world that he
gave..." Shirley Bolt read Celebration
of Spring, Mrs. MacLeod gave the mis-
sion study, on "Serving ri o Masters,"
which showed reflections on money
and spirituality which couldn't be far-
ther apart.
The roilcall was answered with each
one giving a short article from the
Observer. After the business period,
Mrs. Hackett read a fact and fiction
quiz on memory.
Unit 2 by Anna May Hunter
Several Pinecrest residents joined.
Unit 2 when they met there on June 4.
Elsie Houston was pianist.
Phyllis Morrison read an appropriate
e 1,5.
piece on spring. Helen Hackett read the
scripture and devotions and Phyllis
offered prayer.
Helen read from the second reader,
which was the red reader used years
ago, The piece being 1, a 3 the story
about the olds ` old, old lady, who Was
blind and the boy that was half past
three years old and had a crippled leg,
playing hide and seek, although not
ino'ving but guessing where. they might
be hiding.
Phyllis read another poezn Daffodils
from the fourth reader. These readings
brought back memories of school days
for many of the residents.
After visiting with the residents, the
the business portion was opened by
Laura Steffler.
Ten ladies answered . the rollcall with
an article form the Observer. Phyllis
gave the reading of the least coin about
Haiti, the poorest country in the west-
ern hemisphere. The women and chil-
dren suffer; some families are so poor
they can't take care of their own chil-
dren. Many men have been killed or
fled,so the women are left to support
the family. Children have to work and
companies exploit the child labor.
There are some hopeful signs, since
the restoration of democratic govern-
ment in 1994,
