n changes draw
.some parents
their teachers.
Some parents offered
to arrange.' their own
transporation for a half-
day program, others said
they ma),11.0t enroltheir
children in the all -day
tor.ogram.
None of those argu-
ments 'changed the
board's decision, though
they prompted a discus-
sion about: pilot projects
and "local option" for
half-day programs.
"We did pilot projects
with junior kindergarten,
then did nothing with this
pne," said trustee Don
Tedford,. who went on to
note that "parents have
more trouble with change
than the children ever
will have.'
Educational issues
chair Carolyn Day said
the board was denied
"the luxury" of a pilot
project" 'when the trans-
portation committee
abruptly cut out noon
hour buses in response to
a ten per cent provincial
grain cut. She. said with-
out transportation, there
would be no equitable
access to the program for
all students in the county.
Day also: said that staff
have already started
training on the all -day
format, and have been
told py experienced
kindergarten teachers
from other boards they
prefer it to the more
rushed half-day program.
"The local option is all
I've ever asked for," said
vice -chair Frank
Eagleson. He wants
schools that don't require
busing to have the choice
of an all -day or half-day
program.
"Where do you draw
the line?" trustee Patty
• McLay responded. "Is it
• at 100 per cent (agree-
ment)? You, could end up
with backbiting among
parents.
McLay said even if
parents make their own
travel arrangements,
principals will be left to
