storage unit *ins award
A creative .pesticide storage fashioned from a used fuel task
earned Buwinanville, ()ntai o farmers Tina and Steve Bare$1000
cash. The couple entered and won the first Vitvirouniental Fara
Flan Award Contest.
The Harries fabricated a secure pesticide storage from. a used
20,E litre fiberglass fuel tom. They cut off one end of the 2
i
metre diameter tank and upended t like a silo. With.the tank resting
•
on some blocks, they poured 3" . hick concrete floor under the
tank and continued with a high curb around. the outside, all in a
single pour. The seamless concrete creates. a waterproof storage
with a sill to contain any spills
Next, they out out a door about 10" above the concrete sill and
mounted it on hinges The door was sized large enough to accom-
modate the. 50 -litre totes andini-bulk pesticide containers regula -
ly used on the 800 -acre dairy and : cash crop farm. The door is
secured vvith.2 latches, .a lock :andthe requisite, warning, signs. A
turbine on. the 3,6 inetree high dome provides ventilation,
"We're all greatrecyclers," says Tina Barrie who farms ,.with hus-
band Steve in Durhain East County, "Store is one of those guys
who can make something from; almost nothing, This storage was
really cheap to build and anyone could do it. A smaller version
would make a great shed for garden tools, too.$
".There is plenty of room on the flock to store the volumes of her-
bicide
erbic de we use," says Steve. "We only take delivery from, the suppli-
er when we needit and we don't stockpile for an extended period."
Steve and the other 'partners of Terwidlen Farm used available,
low cost materials and applied their own design and construction
talents to lower a recognized environmental and safety risk. Their
unique pesticide storage cost them $185 for materials and about 10
hoursof labor.
"The Barries' innovation reflects the goal of the Environmental
Farm Plan (EFP) to help farmers develop and implement practical,
affordable solutions to farm environmental concerns," says Jeff
Wilson, AGCare Chair, one' of the four co-chairs .of the Ontario
Farm Environmental ental Coalition.,

of dull, overcast days, but it
looks now as if. they'll be,
available by early April.
One of their innovations is
