otes safe
use of pesticides
around
home, garden
by Jayne Brady -I iltenburg
A family memberhas just
finished spraying pesticides. Do
you know the proper .washing
procedure of the operator's
clothes`
What is the :mosteffective
way to get rid of cluster flies?
These are only two questions
dealt with in the new• informa
tion video just released by the
Ontario Farm Women's
Network (OFWN), titled
'Pesticide Safety and the Rural
Home and Garden."
Promoters of the video
explain that "Pesticide safety is`
an important issue' for all fami-
lies. We live and work around
pesticides, but rarely have the
benefit of training in safe usage.
The safe use of pesticides is a
concern for, the whole family.
The video is accompanied by
a resource pamphlet ; that gives
information on such topics as
spray planning,` child safety,
safety equipment, safe clean-up,
.:safe storage and health con-
cerns..

What does it feel like to have
your family featured in a video?,
Very different, let me tell you!
When the OFWN was in the
planning : stages of producing
this video, the 'video committee-
.was; Looking for volunteers to be
part of the Gast. Since we live
on a farm, . had small children
and I was an OFWN member, I
was asked if our family. would
participate. Sure I said. No
problem. Little did r know what
all would be involved!
"Can you do it one .more
tiine?": asked Steve, the video
man.
I say to myself, "I've already
walked through the door and
hung the clothes on the line six
times." And, of course ,it would
have to be a hot, humid August
day when. I had to' get 'suited up
in coveralls, goggles, respirator
and rubber gloves. (Now :I know
why professional actors are well
paid.)
But, the results are worth-
while. I certainly know more
about pesticide use and safety
than Idd before. And that is the
goal of this video "to answer.
some of.the frequently asked
questions about pesticide safe-
