Dairy- farmers can now

UBI has been on the Internet
-for two years. For the uninitiat-
ed, the Internet is a system
wherein computer users can
connect to the World Wide Web
and link onto other ,computers
to view the information sups
plied by companies, individuals,
municipalities, countries. Think
of it as an electronic catalogue.
It is estimated that more than ,30
million computer users, world-
wide, ' are connected to the
Internet
Bill .Cunningham,- UBI's
director of information and
technologies, sees UBI's use of
the Internet 'as another tool .to
market its business .globally.:
Agriculture is well represented
on the 'Internet, what with such
sites and agriculture ministries,
farm publications and business-
es such as U'BI. It's estimated
50 per cent of all dairy farmers
have computers and
Cunningham is enthused that a
good percentage are on the
Internet.;
That's why UBI wanted to be
there 'too,providing.:usefu.l
information to producers.
Wendy 'Robinson af .UBI,
says UBI's Internet site is quite
active when the new bull proofs

For .producer, Ilt now means

olli Cunningham and
Robinson say the !BI Internet
site is .largely accessed by poo-.
ple looking for information.
There haven't been orders for
seinen, but Cunningham is
working -on that and foresees. a
'time when_ :a Enropean company
can place au order. with 13Bi
using the. Internet. .
'Right now it's more infor-
mation, but that doesn't adman. 'it
won't lead to sales," Robinson.
says.
CJ's foray .. onto the World
Wide Web and the thousands -of
"hits" it has received (at' last
count more 'than! 10,000) has
surprised Robinson.
"I assumed farmers weren't

Robinson was at last month's
f. i show ..in Toronto and says
it's one of the best venues for
U13I as people attending the
show are largely farmers, unlike
the pl wing match which
attracts people from all walks of
life.
It was at the show that.
Robinson and other UBI
employees were promoting
UBI's new proving system,
which was implezhented in
January. It's a system'that's
more user friendly and more in-
line with other countries, she
says.
