After the. briefest of layette,it- appears the fed-
eral government is .prepared to put the old ',Sin
°.lax" back to work.
.in• a pre budget report: theCommons Finance
Committee'. recently .recommended governing
Liberal Finance Minister Pani Martin emphasize
new taxes, rather than spending cuts, in the next
federal budget.
Naturally, at the top of -the, list for a hit are cigar
rettes, .with the .committee recornMending'a $1
carton raise in tobacco taxes. Such amove
should 'spark little resistance, even among. smok
• ers, who were recently given a huge break .when.
thefeds- cut the -price of a, pack of smokes in half
when the slashed taxes to :combat a growing
trade in black market. butte.
Other measures',proposed• by the `committee are
bound` to be less well received. A tax on • lottery
winnings.m ght be acceptable at:sorine level, but a
15 percent levy on winnings over $600 is simply
too Petty.'MX major winners:`(over $10,000) per-
haps, but chasing down every-bingo:iackpot win-
ner !tithe country would cost far more than such
a tax Would likelyyield in- new revenues. -
A proposed increase On gasoline tax would be
nothing Short of regressive. • As it drives the
engines •in -:our vehicles, gasoline also drives the
engine .0f, oar economy., Hike the price''and Profits
plummet,'putting people out of work and causing
a corresponding drop in income tax revenue.,
Gasoline taxes, past certain point.(wblch we
reached long .ago),can 'only' be counter-produc-
tive. and the feds should forget about them.
The pre -budget report is merely a• list of sug-
gested measures; from which Martin can take
What,he likes: it he likes a gas tax, he's pretty
short sighted. (Lakeshore Advance).

Mr. Fixit took time out of
his busy schedule to lace up
the skates and play on
Friday night ,with other
Lancer Alumni.
Now some of ,these guys
could • be called "old timers"
remembering there are
various connotations that
tan be applied to this
phrase. My 'old timer' hasn't
• had skates on inabout nine
years. A sport that used to
claim all his leisure winter
time has been relegated to
the memory bank. His
favorite sport, now, takes
.place during the summer
when he. derives great plea-
sure from hitting a little
white ball around, the golf
course. l'rn not complain-
ing; at least this sport l can
participate in.
So when it came time to
dig out the hockey gear and
make sure he had enough
equipment to protect his
:body,; it became, evident that
all his TLC . offer the last
' few years has beet" desig,
Hated to shining his clubs,
cleaning his golf shoes,
dusting his golf bag -and
Mostreccritly personalizing
his golf hails'.

a An interesting evenin - Our wild birds. will be the
g
subject of a lecture by Mr. 'WE, Saunders of London, on
Feb. 17.
Mr. Saunders is oneof the best informed ornithologists
in Canada. As a lad way back in -the 'seventies', when wild
pigeons were still plentiful in Ontario, and before the.
arrival ,of the pestiferous little English sparrow, he became
interested in birds and has studied birds and bird life since
then. •
Admission has been set at the popular pride of .25 for
adults., and .15 for children.

Two' police to serve village - At the Feburary meeting
of village, council, Sidney Whitby was appointed night
constable at a salary of $20 a month. Alex (Sandy)
Havens, town foreman, who was appointed constable pro

Saturday, Feb. 2 was Candlemas Day, when the bear
or the groundhog (take your choice) ventures forth,
. according to tradition, in search of his shadow. If he does-
n't, he hies back to his abode and holes in for another six
weeks of winter If he does, well, spring's just around the
corner.

Although the sun did peak thru Saturday's blizzardly
blasts, we bet Mr. Bruin wasn't waiting around for the
unexpected to happen. what's more, we have the word of
an old-timer; Mr. Albert McQuoid, that for this moth -eat-
ing prognostication to hold. true, Mr. Bruin must be about
before 9 a.m. which means that the day 'would .have to'
