The Burns Night Ball - The dance.
given under Fire Company auspices. on
Monday Night Was a..real old-timer in
every respect but one - and that was an
improvement.
There was just the biggest crowd ever -
all the hall would accommodate and then
some. And there was a rollicking good
time. Only, some couldn't step out and.
swing out as freely as they would like. It
was well-behaved crowd too which took
its departure without the old-time noise.
The night was fine and frosty and the
roads too, so that the county : for miles
round was well represented.

ob post office safe - The local post
office was broken into and the safe
smashed and rifled last week. To
oii.IL e.st in '28
do the job, tools were stolen from the CNR
section house. It will be recalled that tools
were obtained in the same manner the last
time. Silverwood's Creamery was broken
into.
It was estimated that some $700 in
stamps was missing and. about $90 in cash.
During the night Jack McMillan's Chev
was stolen from in front of his farm on the
Boundary, east of Town and
George Fisher's tight truck was . moved
from where it had been left the night
before. Whether or not either or both of
these - were used by the burglars is not cer-
tain.
Temperance Act is valid - That the
Canadian Temperance Act is valid and can
only be .repealed or changed by the.
Parliament of Canada, was the decision
handed down by the five -man tribunal of
the Privy. ,Council. The case was heard in'
London, England, a few weeks ago.
The Canada Temperance. Act is in force
in Huron, Perth, Peel and Manitoulin. The
37 beverage room authorities in the three
counties are regarded as illegal under the
Privy Council's decision, and leaders of
Temperance organizations are waiting to
see what action the Drew Government will.:
take in the matter.

Dear editor:
Well the Planning and Development
Committee (P & D) of -Huron County
Council has turned their backs on the con-
cerns of Ashfield and area residents once
again. •
After an absent ' minded attempt to listen
to our CCAA representative, Don MacNay,
•present a critique on CH2M Gore &
Storrie's (CG & S) draft Stage 2D
Summary Report, P &,,D members voted in
favor of recommending CG & S to conduct
the study on alternatives to a landfill.
The draft reportcontained many mis-
leading statements. Some of these included:
reference to public meetings that never
occurred in the proposed A3 site area: mis-
information regarding the final height of
the proposed landfill, or the nature of gran-
ular
ranular deposits on the site; minimizing the
effect of depreciated property values even
when council is currently negotiating a set-
tlement
ntlement for, a local property owner who.
must sell due to health reasons; contradict-.
ing themselves by stateinents as to the land
classification. being. Class. f (60%) and.
Class - . (40%) In one area of the, report yet
it is primarily Mass 3 and 4 in another area
of the report. These are only a few of many
misconceptions. A haul route impact study
has never been conducted to date.
Are the residents of Lucknow aware that
there would probably be an average of three
waste vehicles per hour passing through the
village? .-
If CG S's .draft Stage 2D report is any
indication as to what they'll present on the
alternatives study, the final product will be
very impressive -- that is if you like the
"Swiss cheese" approach. A September let-
ter on incineration from Vito Cerone of CO
& S already presents a biased rehash Of Out-
dated information -one we feel will likely
be repeated in all alternative study review,
I suppose it didn't matter that the Stage
2D report contained manycontradictions
and inaccuracies. It didn't matter that sim-
ple citizens such as ourselves once again
had to point out these errors rade by sup-
posedly well-educated individuals. It didn't
matter that we were doing the, work that the
elected members of the. P & D. committee
should have
do:ne.
Rather thanop
eniag the door to
other, her
possibly more objeetive and professional,
evaluations on the
alternatives study, P & .D'
asked CO S for their proposal along with

`Taking it to the limit
idle an provincial
residents (includ-
ing some Tories)
are questioning the stability
of the minds y •,I 26,
there is a resid
taking his doubts to the
limit. .
A newspaper report last
week says that a Burlington
doctor "fried an application
with Balton Region police
to force: Premier Mike
Harris and Health Minister
Jim Wilson to undergo psy-
chiatric assessments over
the proposed omnibus bill,"
The report quotes from
the application that•the bill's
contents "seem to be dra-
conian" and refers to the
applicant's claim that Bili
26 "wield restrict medical
service to patients across
Ontario."
This doc has strength in
his conviction and is mak-
ing an attempt to take it to
the Whit. If be bat, at y g'
to do with it, these two
Tories• will have their heads
examined*
Seems the doctor kept
thinking that some things in
Bill 26 are "crazy." His next
deduction was "Maybe they
are crazy." His application
indicates he thinks Harris is
suffering from a mental dis-
order that could cause harm
to others. No'doubt!
The medical man backs
up his thinking with "Mike
has developed a monotone
voice, flat affectand inap-
propriate actions..., these
could be the early signs of a
thought disorder or psychot-
ic disorder.:."
Wilson's angry action
when he does not get his
own way is another obser-
vation of the doctor's.
When you get right down
to it, what government, at
any level, hasn't had what's
between their ears ques-
tioned? It's nothing knew;'
but you gotta give the doc
credit for trying!,
Those were.
the days...
