Christmas in Norway
I am a twenty. I spud my life
travelling from place to place, celebrating
many different customs and holidays.
I have been in many countries for
Christmas and I am going to tell you
about my wonderful Christmas spent in
Notwiry,
While in Norway I vent Christmas
with st Norwegian family.
Many weeks before Christmas the
families in Norway are very busy =king
gifts and Plectiting food to be stored for
the winter. Sausages and cheese are
made; animal shaped cookie and breads
are baked; smallcoloured candles are
finished for the Christmas tree and the
lutefisks is ready.
I heard loud clear chimes of churchbells
ringing everywhere. I turned to the father
of the house and asked him (in
Norwegian, of course) why the bells were
ringing? He explained that the bells were
calling the People to the five o'clock
church service to celebrate the birth of
Jesus. What a celebration it was!
As I stood outside of the church 1 saw
people coming from everywhere;People
who did not regularly attend came for the
service at Christmas. I asked an English
speaking man "why so many people
maid". In Canada very few attend church
on Christmas Eve. He told me that almost
all Norwegians attend Christmas Eve
/mikes even if they don't many come
to chinch. He area told me 160' did Oda
to celebrate the birth of-Jeus.
One of the most charming customs of
Norway is the remembrance of the
animals and birds, since they were the
ones proem at the birth of the My
Baby. The farm beasts are aJIcarefully
tended, and the cattle are given extra hay
and grain. The most beautiful of all the
customs is saved for the birds. The best
gleaned sheaf, is saved Boni the fall
harvest and is placed on top of tall pole
in the yard, On Christmas rooming, every
gateway and barndoor isited with a
bundle of pain the birds' Christmas
dinner. It is a very beautiful sighrto see
many birdsteasting on the luscious treats.
The children love to watch the birds on
Christmas day.
Everyone in the family eats a great deal
and share their presents following -the
meal.
Norwegians joyfully celebrate the real
meaning of Christmas. Maybe you will be
able to spend Christmas in Norway some
year. It is a wonderful place.
Next year I think I'll spend Christmas
