After -three y o n go aon,;
Bruce County and Public Works
Canada have agreed on a price for
.the county -owned Cameron. n. Lake
forest.
•
•.
That means that by thesecond
half of 1991, the 3,100 -acre tract
could become part of the Bruce
National Park.
The federalSovernment indicated
several years ago that it wants, the
Cameron Lake forest t included in ''
the national park 'boundaries, ° but
federal and county, .negotiators
couldn't agree on a price.
Talks were so slow, that at one
point Bruce County council offered
the land for sale on the • open
market. That raised a storm of
protest, along with a fewoffers
The county and- federal
government have now agreed on :a
price of $1.2 million ' for the land.'
That expense by Public Works
Canada has yet to be 'approved by
the federal treasury board; but Brad
Davis of the county's negotiation
committee doesn't anticipate any
problems.
"It's a very important piece of
land for the park,",Davis said. "As
far as I'm concerned, it's sold.' '
The federal government has until
February 20, 1991 to sign the deal
and until June 1, 1991 to complete
the transaction.
County council already has plans.
for the spendingproceeds of the
sale,' though they have changed
recently. • Until this month, the'
profits were slated to build a.couity
satellite 'office, for planning ` and.
tourism staff in,Wiarti n.
But ;a new ` five-year capital
forecast released' Tuesday, Nov. 20
axed that project in favor of
increasing reserve funds for an
estimated $10 million worth of
work need in the near future.: to
upgrade the county homes for the
aged in 'Warton and Walkerton.
Salaries
Non-union Bruce County
employees and councillors alike got
4.2 per cent pay raises at last Tues-
day's session (Nov. 20) of county
council.
The in brings councillors'
full-day increase
$104. Reeve Joe.
Hawke suggested council -"hold the
line" on their own pay "given the
economic conditions," but he didn't
make a motion on the issue.
Staff gives to kids
The Save the Children Fund will
be $90 richer this year thanks to
Bruce County staff.
Traditionally, councillors donate
$10 each to the fund instead of
exchanging Christmas cards, but
this year a new twist was added by
Reeve Roy Pennington.
Ile said all staff and department
heads at the session ,(Nov. 20) not
wearing a county pin should give
$10 to the fund.

by-law enforcement officer.
Crozier told council at its Noiem
ber 20 session that over the past
two ; years the infestation has
increased, especially in the north of
the county.
An estimated 30 to 50,000 acres
are ,riow. affected, with indications
the' problem; will spread.:"
Crozier said Albemarle •- and
Eastnor , townships are .cespeciially
hard' hit:
"There is more and more stress
On the trees , That's not to say
they'll diet but there will be die -
back because of the stress," Crozier
said.
He wants an aerial spray program
for the entire affected area starting
in June. Bruce council agreed to, the
plan, but it wants the Ministry. of
Natural Resources and the Ministry
of the Environment to run the
program, as well as pay for it.
Ecodomie. dev merit
There: were only three opposing ,
votes as Bruce County council
,voted -November 20 to support the
South Bruce Economic Develop-
ment Corporation for another• five
yam.
The South Bruce group has to
tightenits belt for the next five
years as Ontario IHydro:dropped its
funding from the $200,000 a year it
has been giving to an estimated
$100,000.
South Bruce hopes the cor-
poration . will contribute annually.
Bruce County • and 10 -member
municipalities contribute another
$107,000 a year to the budget.
South Bruce vice-president Doug
Fletcher said that funding .is vital.
"County support is . crucial,
Without • it, Ontario Hydro won't
support us," Fletcher said.
Part of South Bruce's five-year
plan includes changing the "misco
nception" that industries locating in
the area would ° be "remote" from
city markets.
Other goals focus on creating
more opportunities for youth
through training and junior
achievement programs, along with
continued efforts to promote and
develop industry and business in
South Bruce..
Fletcher said that compared to the
gloomy economic, picture of, fiveor
six years ago, the entrepreneurial
spirit is "alive and well" on South
Bruce.

Candlelight ceremony
to honour victims
On December 6, from 7 to 7:30
p.m., a candlelight ceremony will
be held at the Guderwh Courthouse
Squaw. Its purpose is to honour and
remember the vicpunts of the
Montreal Massacre.
One year ago Canadians were
stunned by the, news' that a lone
man with a gun walked into the
School of Engineering at Eco1e
Polytechnique du M'o'ntreal .and
killed 14 women. •
During the days and months that
followed, the question was raised
again and again. Was the Montreal
Massacre of 14 women a random
and isolated. act of a madman or a
larger societal problem of Men
hating women?
• Beyond a doubt, the Montreal
Massacre .stands out as the most
dramatic .act of violence against
women in our nation's history. But
it is not. Violence against Pwomen is,
an insidious part of Canadian life.
Nty=seven woinea were killed by
their spouses/partners in 1988. On
hundred and nineteen women were
killed, in 1989 bytheir
spouse /partners. These statistics are
frightening and tragically real. ,But,
they do not speak of the countless
acts of violence' such as, as -
snit and harassment. Nor do they
speak of the fear that every women
and girl must cope with daily.
All residents of Huron County,
women, men and children are in-
vited to attend this candlelight
ceremony; to remember and re%og-
size the need to end all violence in
our society. And to recognise the
need for men and women to make
a . personal commitment to work
together for this end.
If weare not part of the solution,
:then we are part of the problem.
First mourn, thenwork for
cheat °.
