The Lucknow Sentinel, 1990-03-21, Page 5Mother of two toddlers disagrees with idea of junior kindergarten To the .edit},.{ P. pppL -.: f- .: I disagree with the Beaof Educa i in Bruce County introducing junior kindergarten toour admin. It IS not fair when most of the parents in our county have not even been asked or surveyed. about their opinions to this deciaien. I personally feel junior kindergarten is notnecessary, but we must pay for it whether we use it or not. . I am the mother of two children, aged three and; one. I have nothing against. err. eouraging learning and development of children. The major fact the Board is. '. overlooking is that four year olds are just past the "baby stage"; some are not ful- lypotty-trained yet. Most four year olds and five year olds need nape in the after. noon. Is it fair to the child or parent of those who must attend junior kindergarten in the afternoon, to have to miss that important nap time? I disagree with Mrs. Deeth's suggestion (March 14 Sentinel) that sa half a day of quality time with a parent is better for a child than a whole day where quality time isn't spent. As a mother, I read, sing, play, talk and moat importantly LISTEN to my children. -I feel my' whole.. day is spent with my children because I want to raise them. If I had wanted a nanny for my four year old, I would have, hired one. Mrs. Deeth's feelings that . children need junior kindergarten to associate with other children and adults is not entirely true. I feel our community caters to parents' and children's activities well, with parent and tot skating and swimm- ing, story hour, ample parks and restaurants make them feel welcome, as do other parents by allowing children to come and play at their homes. I think the children here have no lack of associa- tion ssociation with other children and adults. TC) THE EDITOR Mrs.Deeth also suggested that junior kindergarten will reduce the special, education claim later on. I believe that the increased number of special educa- tion students is due to a disturbed or gained home life. Junior kindergarten isnow, but how many years will it be it is mandatory►, and where • do we draw the age limit for those born bd!ore December 31? Will we be sending three year olds to school? How mud* more of our children's childhood can we take away? Junior kindergarten would be beat us- ed if a child. .can attend one or two half days per week, instead of five days a week. I think it is a lot to expect of a child. • I feel that children who' do attend junior kindergarten should not be treated as though they are more intelligent than those who do not attend. entering grade one all children should still be .given an equal' chance to learn. have hard the complaint from a lot of senior students that they are "burned out" by the time they reach grades 10, 11,12 or college.' They feel that they have been in school too long, so the drop out • to take a year off and never do return to. college or university. I do not feel it is necessary to add one more year to the school system. Let's let our babies be . babies and give our childrena chance to be children, before we push them into an adult world too soon. Sincerely, Nancy Guay Lucknow This will lower the deficit?
