Unit 1 Members of Unit 1 of the Lucknow United Church Women met with Units 2 and 3 in the Church Fellowship Room for a delicious luncheon at noon and a very in- teresting program planned by the commit- tee in charge. Each unit then gathered in separate groups for a short time. Mrs. Grace Gibson, leader, welcomed 13 members and read a thought entitled Fruit of the Spirit. The rollcall was answered with a verse on `Gentleness'. The treasurer's report was read and envelopes and special offerings received. Happy Birthday was sung to Mrs. McFarlane and Mrs. Jean MacLeod, and donations put in the jar. Mrs. Gordon Morrison asked for food and helpers for the fowl supper and orders aken for calendars, spoons and pins. Unit 1 then joined the other groups and the discussion on the number of units was left the same for another year. Mrs. McFarlane closed with a prayer. Unit 3 The three afternoon units of United Church met for noon lunch at 12:30 p.m., October 6. Mrs. Gerald McFarlane presid- ed for the Worship service and introduced our guest speaker, Mrs. Joan Moffitt, social worker with Wesley Centre, United Church Mission in Hamilton. This was a most informative presentation with the use of video and address to the 40 members preent. She was thanked by Mrs. Elsie Houston and presented with a gift from the three afternoon units and a second envelope with the free-will offering of the lunch guests for Mission work at the Wesley Centre. • Each, unit „ adjourned to have their business meeting and to hear conveners' reports. Mrs. Shiells and Ms. Lemonine had visited the sick in September. Cards were signed for the sick. Donations for Goodwill Industries can be left at the Church after the Anniversary Fowl supper October 20. Leader and social function convener, Mrs. Glen Walden, made arrangements for food and helpers for the supper. It was the unanimous decision of the nine members preent to continue with the three units for the coming yer. Minutes of the last meeting were read by Elise Houston, treasurer's report by Isobel Miller with the offering taken and dedicated by Mrs. Walden. The rollcall was 'a verse with `thanks'. Unit 4 Unit 4 of Lucknow United Church Women met on Tuesday, October 6, with an attendance of 22. The rollcall was answered with an Observer item. The program committee, Mrs. Arm- strong Wilson, Mrs. Gerald McFarlane and Mrs. George Whitby chose as the theme for the meeting, Harvest and Thanksgiving. Mrs. Wilson gave two readings, Autumn and Harvest Blessings, ,and the scripture was read by Mrs. McFarlane. Mrs. Greg Blake favoured with two pleasing violin numbers. The meditation was given by Mrs. McFarlane and Mrs. Whitby. Mrs. Harold Greer read a poem of thanks and Mrs. Wilson closed with a Thanksgiving prayer. Guest speaker was Mrs. Joan Moffitt, social worker with Wesley Centre, the United Church Mission in Hamilton. A video was shown on the work accomplish- ed there. Following the video, Mrs. Moffitt spoke to the group, telling in detail the wonderful work being done at Wesley Cen- tre and Strathcona. Mrs. Moffitt was thanked by Lorna Weatherhead and presented with a gift. Mrs. Harold Greer, unit leader, presided for the business. Reports were given by the treasurer, Mrs. Ken Cameron and com- munity friendship, Mrs. Cliff Crawford. Donations were received for the turkey supper October 20. Mrs. Gordon Cayley gave the following announcements: the Thankoffering meeting November 15; October 19 a workshop at Bethel United Church for eight churches in the area. A social time followed with the commit- tee serving lunch... Units One, Two and Three of the Lucknow U.C.W. gathered in the Fellowship Room on Tuesday, October 6 for a noon luncheon of soup and sand- wiches. There were 39 members and three visitors in attendance. Rev. Gerald McFarlane said the bless- ing and after the lunch, Mrs. McFarlane presided over the program. The opening hymn, "Come Ye Faithful People, Come" was sung by Mrs. Peter Cook. Mrs Stuart Reavie read a Thanksgiving poem and Miss Isobel Miller read the scripture. Mrs. Jean MacLeod gave the devotions and Mrs. Ruth Mathers said a prayer. The hymn "We Thank Thee 0 Our Father" closed the worship. The speaker for the afternoon, Mrs. Joan Moffat, was introduced by Mrs. Mac- Farlane. Mrs. Moffat, a social worker with the Wesley Centre,. a United Church Mis- sion in Hamilton, showed a, video of . her work there. Their main concerns are food, employment, health, shelter and clothing for the poor and destitute. The average number of meals served per day are 187 with the youngest member of the centre being 11 days old and the oldest 78 years. Seventy-five per cent of those sevred are men she said. Following the video presentation and her talk, there was an interesting discussion. Mrs. Elsie Houston thanked the guest speaker and presented her with a gift and $55, the amount from our freewill offering. Mrs. Cayley gave the announcements next. Our Fall Thank Offering will be held in the church on Sunday evening, November 15. The guest speaker will be Arvilla Leis from the Board of the Inter Church Council. We gave 25th anniversary spoons and pins for sale. Plans are being made for the Church Fowl Supper this month. We then divided into our seperate groups for business. Mrs. Vernon Hunter opened with a poem followed by prayer. The minutes were read a approved. Mrs. Alex Hackett gave the treasurer's report. We sang happy birthday to Mary McGillivary and to Janet Cook. Mrs. Hunter and Laura Hare volunteered to visit this month. Mary McGillivary asked for food and help for our supper and Mrs. Hunter took orders for the church calendars. Anna Dexter reported on the visits that she, Ida Barger and Mary Black made this past month. We also had a discussion as to whether the members would like to con- tinue with three units or combine to form two. Elsie Houston made a motion that we try three units for another year and this was carried. A prayer by Mrs. MacFarlane closed the meeting.
