Nancy Nugent

Olympic Torch
BY AB WYLDS
Now it's official! Nancy Nugent has
received confirmation that she will run in
the Olympic Torch relay. She will carry the
Torch, weighing 1.5 kilograms (3.3 lbs) for 1
kilometer on January 2, somewhere bet-
ween Sarnia and Reeces Corners - and will
be notified of the exact place and time later.
Nancy is very pleased and excited to have
been one of those chosen to take part in this
national historic event. She was born in Sar-
nia on" January 2, 1971 and says "What a
great way to celebrate my 17th birthday ! "
Her parents are Rev. Hugh Nugent and
Mrs. Frances Nugent and Nancy is a
member of their family who reside in the
manse beside the Knox Presbyterian
Church in Ripley. Folks in the Ripley Huron
and in Ashfield and surrounding area all of-
fer congratulations to " Nancy on receiving
this honour.

weekend.

Ripley Happy Hearts Senior Citizens Club.
It will be held in the Ripley Legion Hall.
They are hoping to see everyone there.

celebrated being 65 five years ago, are

On Tuesday, Aug. 25, Walter and Isabelle
Forster were in their garden near the house
when they were startled by a loud crash and
the crunch of breaking timbers coming from
the direction of the house next door belong-
ing to Donald and Angela Bell.
Fearing that either the roof had cared in
or the rear wall had collapsed, Walter and
Isabelle hurried across to see what had
happened.
To their amazement they saw a huge
branch, comprizing half of the massive old
Northern Spy apple tree had broken off near fl
the trunk and crashed against the house and
deck.
First the good news! There was no
damage done to man or beast or house. Now
the bad news! This was the fruit bearing
branch which produced the prize Northern
Spy apples shown in the Ripley Fall Fair
over the last 13 years. Donald Bell had
rescued the tree from the ravages of Apple
Scab, Railroad and Apple Borer through a
heavy yearly spraying campaign - no easy
feat on a tree 50 feet high! The apples were
unrivalled for their flavour in pies and apple
sauce through the years. Sadly, the end of
an era!
Cyril Jackson of Port Credit was the
weekend guest of Mr. and Mrs. Donald A.
Bell. Cyril has been a visitor to Bruce Coun-
ty over many years, and enjoys the Kincar-
dine Golf Course. Thanks goes to Donald
and Angela for these two items.
Thanks goes to Mrs. Gladys Arnold of
Ripley for her account of the Geddes reu-
nion held recently at the Purple Grove com-
munity centre. Also to Mrs. Reta Irwin of
Ripley Street for the Welsh family reunion
at St. Luke's in Lurgan at at the foot of the
Fourth concession recently.
