FAREWELL
Putting one's departing thoughts into
words is not particularly an easy task,
especially when I start to recall some of
my work experiences in Bruce. However,
after a great deal of consideration I have
decided to resign from O.M.A.F. effective
July 3rd. My plans for the future include
becoming involved in operating my own in-
surance business as well as spending more
time "down on the farm".
I wish,to take this opportunity to thank
the many county 4-H families, 4-H leaders,
Junior Farmer members as well as all
those in the various rural organizations
who I have come to know and appreciate
over the past years for making my deci-
sion to leave so difficult. Truly its been
great working with you. I must have en-
joyed it, or I would not'have stayed so long.
Transition is never easy but I feel the
time is right for both the county and
myself.
I look forward to still being able to meet
and work with the people of Bruce and
Grey Counties in the years ahead. Thank
you for all your supporting efforts and
thoughtfulness.

FORAGE FERTILIZER
August is the ideal time to apply fer-
tilizer to legumes. This means soil samples
should be submitted in July so the results
will be back by mid-August. Soil boxes for
this free service are available at all
O.M.A.F. offices.
MILKWEEK
Milkweed is in the ideal stage of growth
for the application of Roundup. The pro-
duct can be sprayed or wiped on the plants.

Harus suited to local growing conditions
Harus, a new white winter wheat variety
suited to growing conditions in
Southwestern Ontario ( Areas 1 and 2), has
been licensed by Agriculture Canada and
is now available in limited quantities for
planting in 1987.
"We expect Harus to eventually reolace
Frederick as the dominant winter wheat
variety in Ontario," says Larry White,
managing director of SeCan, which
distributes Harus and other public
varieties through its members.
In fact, Harus is a cross of Fredrick and
Yorkstar. Yorkstar, which was recently
dropped from the Ontario list of recom-
mended varieties, was the most popular
winter wheat variety in Ontario before
Fredrick was licensed in 1971. Shortly
after its introduction, Fredrick also grew
quickly in popularity to account for the
vast majority of Ontario's winter wheat
acreage. "Harus is next in line in this
natural progression," says SeCan's Larry
Do You Kn
Sentinel C
White.
Harus was developed by Dr. Abe Teich,
a plant breeder at Agriculture Canada's
Harrow Research Station. Teich says
many breeders had crossed Yorkstar and
Fredrick, but no one had been able to cap-
ture Yorkstar's top baking quality and
Fredrick's strong straw and exceptional
disease resistance in a single cross of the
two varieties.
The plant that eventually led to Harus
wheat was Teick's 'lith plant from the
cross of Yorkstar and Fredrick. "There
was a large element of luck involved," the
breeder adds. "But the harder you work,
the luckier you get."
Teich's "luck" can now be translated in-
to good fortune for Ontario winter wheat
growers, since Harus performs better than
either of its parents. "Harus is superior to
Fredrick in every way," reports Teich.
Early maturing Harus is even more short-
strawed than Fredrick, which - means even
better lodging resistance. Harus is also
more resistant than Fredrick to diseases
such as powdery mildew, leaf rust and
septoria.
In fact, Harus performs better than any
other white winter wheat recommended
for Ontario conditions. According to On-
tario field trials, Harus yields an average
of 10% more than Fredrick and significant-
ly more than any other variety except
Augusta. Harus is equal in yield to
Auguta but Harus exhibits greater
disease resistance. Harus is more resis-
tant to wheat spindle streak mosaic than
any other variety licensed for Areas 1 and
2. Harus is also resistant to head scab in
wheat.
Harus' baking quality is better than
Fredrick's, which is the current quality
standard among Ontario winter wheats.
Harus was named to honor the contribu-
tions oAgriculture Canada's research
staff di - Harrow.
