The Lucknow Sentinel, 1987-07-08, Page 5Reader feels paper
is filled with gossip
TO
To the Editor;
I am writing in reference to the Lucknow
paper as you have probably gathered. I am
so fed up with the paper that I refuse to
take a subscription out.
Inside the paper we have Whitechurch,
Lucknow, Dungannon, Kinlough,
Lochalsh, Brookside, Ripley, South
Kinloss and Purple Grove news. These sec-
tions are like the National Enquirer.
On June 16, the Lucknow Kindergarten
graduated. Where was the picture and the
write-up? The LCPS Insider reads like it
was written two weeks ago. The paperwas
brought out on June 24th and yet all the
news was about the last week of school. It
does no one any good to find out on June 24
dismissal time is at 2:30 on June 18. The
same with Brookside. If we don't get the
paper until the 24th saying that graduation
is on the 22nd, the paper is useless.
As far as I'm concerned most of the
paper is filled with gossip. Why is that stuff
printed before the real news and if space is
a real problem, then maybe you should
consider increasing the size of the paper.
Also, if news items contain an important
date coming up it does the people who read
the paper no good if the date has already
passed. If the item is not submitted in time
then cancel the irrelevant part and tell the
people submitting to be more punctual.
I would appreciate any satisfaction you
can give on these matters.
Sincerely,
Coree Gibbons
Lucknow.
Editors Note:
First, thank -you for your concerns, Cor-
ee, and remember, we'll print any letters
we receive marked 'Dear Editor' as long
as it is signed and isn't too nasty.
Now, if I may answer some of your con-
cerns keeping in mind that this paper was
without an editor on the dates you have
mentioned. The good people who submit
the "National Enquirer gossip", as you
refer to it, are not trained journalists and
do their best to supply their community, no
matter how small, with the news of the
day, no matter how trivial. If you don't like
it, don't read it. We are happy to have cor-
respondents in these communities and will
continue to run the material they submit.
As for the Sentinel printing outdated in-
formation, I would say we do our best
under the circumstances but, yes, some
things we do miss. But if I had children, I
certainly wouldn't wait until the paper was
published to find out when my kid was be-
ing dismissed from school. That is a
parents responsibility, not that of the
newspaper.
By the way, the picture of the Lucknow
Kindergarten graduation was held from
the 16th so it could be included in our
special graduation section of last week's
paper.
If you are looking for international news,
Mrs. Gibbons, subscribe to the Toronto
Star. We are a community newspaper and
we will continue to run community news
because, to us, that is the "real news".

That Keeps Bouncing Back!
There was once a dollar all crisp and new, spent in a store by so-
meone like you.
Someone thinking of their hometown. Who wanted the dollars to
stay around.
The store gave the dollar to farmer Brown, who had brought some
of his produce to town.
The farmer's car needed tires and repairs, so he went to another
place for his wares.
`Course they never kept it but spent it for parts. Do you realize
what this really starts? A chain of reaction that gladdens our
hearts.
The parts man put it back on its way. For his wife he bought a
dress that very day.
So the clothier was able to fix the store. That kept the dollar go-
ing some more.
Then the carpenter had something to do. Someone benefited —
maybe you!
For gas or drugs it could have been spent. We'll never know which
way it went.
But here's one thing we know is true. It's terrific what your dollars
will do.
It builds our community everywhere. Can we count on you to do
your share???
