The Lucknow Sentinel, 1987-05-20, Page 9Students congratulated on science fair The Knights of Columbus were very pleas- ed at the overwhelming success of the sale of lapel roses for Pro -Life on Mother's Day, May 10th. A sincere thank you to all those who so generously donated. Members of.the community are invited to a Victorian Garden Party to be held at Sacred Heart Church, Wingham on May 24th beginning at 12:30 p.m. The admission of $3.00 includes a buffet lunch, entertain- ment and .much more. The garden party is being sponsored by the Sacred Heart Folk Choir with proceeds going to the church building fund. At the school, many of the students chose to enter the science fair competition. The entries were excellent and covered a wide range of subjects. The winners in each of the levels went on to the Huron -Perth competi- tion in Seaforth. The following students were picked to go on to Seaforth and are to be commended on the time and effort spent on their projects. Congratulations to the following. Grade 7 and 8,. Patricia Stapleton first with her project on cancer; Rachael Brophy, second with carbon dioxide and Dean Reigling third with a project on water. In grade 5 and 6 the winners were as follows: first Lori Nicholson and Jane Brophy with yeast; second "Jennifer Tigert on honey bees and third Amy Olson and Heidi Martin on tea. The Grade 3 and 4 win- ners, were first Erin Hickey with the hec- tagraph, second Ben Brophy with a project on hot water, cold water and third Constan- tine Ritgen with his project on volcanoes. Mr. Phil Antonio and the grade 7-8 class will be leaving for a three-day excursion to Ottawa and district on May 27th. The kindergarten, grade 1 and 2 students along with their teachers, Mrs. Jackie Simp- son and Mrs. Barb Eedy are going to be par- ticipating in the program . `Boots, Bubbles and Bugs 1" at the Wawanosh Valley Con- servation Area on May 22nd. All are looking forward to their respective trips. St. Joseph's Catholic Women's League held their regular monthly meeting on Tues- day, May 5 in St. Joseph's parish hall with 23 members present. This was the first meeting with the newly installed executive. Two members of the league, Pauline Nicholson and Kathy Olson attended the London Diocesan Convention of the CWL in Windsor on May 5-6. Teresa Courtney and Betty Frayne reported on visits to the sick and shut-ins of the parish and community. Clarice Dalton reported on pro-life activities including the picketing of Premier David Peterson on his recent visit to Champion Grader in Goderich. Nine pro-life members from Kingsbridge took part in the demonstration. Dalton also reported that the family coalition party was able to pre- sent to the commission on election expenses 11,000 signatures in support of the officail registration of this party. The party can now enlist members and set up local riding associations. Betty Lou Dalton gave a report on the re- cent bee held to clean the church and thank- ed all those who gave of thier time and ef- forts. Lists of the catering groups for 1987 were reminded that dues for 1987-88 are now die. Our spiritual director Father Ed Den- tinger gave a brief report on the day of recollection held on May 1 with Monsignor Adams. He also spoke to the ladies about having parishoners take turns each Satur- day and Sunday to stand at the back of the church to greet visitors and new parish members and assist them .in any way possible. Joanne Doherty planned a very successful high school reunion at Saltford on May 9 with approximately 140 guests enjoying the get together and meal catered by the St. Joseph's CWL. The Senior's Spring Birthday Party is this afternoon, May 13, at 1:30 p.m. in the church hall sponsored by the CWL. Everyone is welcome to come out and help the seniors celebrate their birthdays. The CWL has planned their annual spring garage sale for Saturday, June 6 beginning at 10 a.m. Plan to come out, who knows what treasures you might find. Brother Carl is leaving on much deserved holidays May 14 for a two-week visit to the west. We wish him God Speed and an en- joyable holiday. We joyfully welcome to our parish com- munity the family of Tony and Darlene Bok- ker and their three young children. The Bokker family are residing in Dungannon. The May crowning of Mary will be held on May 31. A generous donation by Mr. Julien Delbergue for roses for Mary if gratefully appreciated and will make the ceremony especially beautiful and memorable. Upcoming May weddings in the parish in- clude Marian Knoop and Michael Bradley and Tony Van Dyke and Laurie West both on May 30. Congratulations to both couples. The Knights of Columbus annual conven- tion is to be held on May 16-18 in Toronto. The representative from the Kingsbridge - St. Augustine-Lucknow council will be Bill VanOsch who will be accompanied by his wife, Ann. Father Ed will be going down on the Sunday with other local priests to con- celerate the Sunday liturgy. Also of interest to the community is the Rummage Sale to be held in St. 'Augustine on Saturday, May 16 from 10 a.m. - 2p.m. Plan to attend. The community school committee held a meeting in St. Joseph's community school, theirs May 6 at 8 p.m. to discuss the summer play school. Conducted every summer at the community school. Ads are to be placed in the paper for students under 18 to assist with play school activities. Also discussed were ways to improve the playground. At the school things were as active as ever. Monday, May 4 was a PA Day for the students with the teachers participating in a Language Arts Workshop at St. Aloysius, Stratford. On Friday, May .8 science fair projects were on public display in the gym for view- ing and judging. A full report will appear in next week's paper. The system science fair for display of the proJects of the students in Huron and Perth is this afternoon, May 13 at the Seaforth Arena from 2-4 p.m. Some of the students in grades 5-8 are practicing two -pitch in preparation"for the two -pitch tournament to be held at Sacred Heart School, Wingham on Thursday, May 21. Forms will be given out on May 15 for a school cheese sale to raise funds for school excursions. The cheese is from Bright's Cheese House and is of excellent quality. Contact any student from St. Joseph's com- munity school for your order befor Monday, June 1. The students in grade 4-8 will be involved in the Garvey public speaking reciting poetry, giving impromptu speeches and put- ting on skits on May 15.
