Locals set out on old-fashioned trek
By Alan Rivett
Pioneer times were revisited as a group
of Kinloss Township horsemen set out on a
four day journey last Friday which was
just a little out of the ordinary.
Nine covered wagons, three buggies and
eight saddle horses left the Frank Murray
farm in Kinloss Township for a long
weekend ride through Bruce County.
According to Leo Murray, one of the
organizers of the wagon trip, the group
would travel as far as Chepstow on Friday
and stay at the Harvey Murray' farm for
the night with all enjoying a meal at the
King Edward Hotel in Chepstow. On Satur-
day, they would travel northwest to the
Fraser Lamont farm near "Underwood
before stopping for the night. Sunday, the
group would be travelling south along
Highway 21, ending that days journey at
the Green Acre Family Camp. In the mor-
ning, the group would be treated to a pan-
cake breakfast before embarking on the
long journey back to Kinloss Township.
A total of 70 Miles would be travelled
during the course of the weekend; with
everyone providing their own food as well
as hay and grain for the horses. As for ac-
commodations, everyone brought sleeping
bags for bunking in the back of the wagons
for the nights, said Mr. Murray.
He said the plans for the, journey were
made last December with all the horsemen
in the area excited about the prospects of
the a long weekend travelling by wagons.
Making the trip were, Dan and Sheila
McDonald and Joohn D. McKay of Ripley;
Harold and Betty Smith of Holyrood; Mr.
and Mrs. Len Woods and Mr. and Mrs. Jim
Vance, all of Walkerton; Mr. and Mrs.
Paul Greenwood of the Ripley area; Weir,
and Grace Eckenswiller of Holyrood;
Gerald and Nancy Murray of Holyrood;
Frank and Bernice Murray; Don and
Shirley Scott; Angus MacDougall, Alf and
Marion Seiford of Mildmay; Russ Mackie;
Leo Murray; Delores Cross and parents
Stan and Marie Sokoloski of. Mount Forest
and Mr. and Mrs. Jack MacKenzie.
