The Lucknow Sentinel, 1987-05-20, Page 2wrA I.:ar. ,u Page 2--Lueknow Sentinel, Wednesday, May 20, 1987 Council gives Drop-in Centre five-year lease Lucknow Council passed a motion giving the Drop -In Centre for senior citizens in Lucknow a five-year lease on the newly - renovated downstairs room in the Lucknow Town Hall. Under the agreement, any assets pur- chased by the Drop -In Centre will be covered under the village's insurance policy.. Signs Lucknow council motioned to have four new signs made and erected at the village's four entrances at cost of approx- imately $300 per sign. The ensignia of a horseshoe will be used on the sign instead of the shamrock which currently adorns the village's signs. Applications Four letters were received by village council from the Ministry of Tourism and Recreation. The letters stated the applica- tions for the grants for the lighting and fen- cing at the Kinsmen Ball Diamond, a cap - tial grant for the first phase of the new arena, and the conversion grant for repairs to the arena roof have been receiv- ed by the ministry. According to the letter, the applications will be "priorized" into the order in which projects will receive funding. It stated notification of grants will be carried out in two months from the deadline of May 1. Donation Council gave a donation of $250 to the Salvation Army after council received a letter from the charitable organization. The amount was the same as last year's donation. Weed Inspector Bruce County weed inspector Lorne Robinson made his yearly visit to the May council meeting to go over any weed pro- blems the village may be experiencing. He said the spraying of the large number of Hogweed growing along the river near Anderson's Flax was successful last year as the weed numbers have declined in this area. He advised council that they should still undertaking spraying of this noxious weed this year. He also asked council, and Lucknoyfs designated weed inspector Gary Aust, if the village was experiencing any other weed problems. No other weed ,problems were reported by council. J' Scouts request A request by the Luckn w Scouting Association for a donation send two scouts to the World Scouting Ja boree to be held in Australia this year was erred to the village's service clubs. Cement work Council motioned that Claude Guay Masonry be hired to do the cement work at the side entrance to the Lucknow Town Hall at a cost of $935. Work program denied Council received a letter from the Ex- perience '87 program which provides government grants for the hiring of students Or the summer. The letter stated the villa ,e's grant application was denied. No rea on was given for the grant denial. Counci decided to go ahead with .plans to hire,- a summer student regardless, -authorizing Clerk -Treasurer Bertha Whit - croft to put an ad in The Se`htinel to adver- tise for a summer student worker for the village. Appointment Council made a motion that H.B. (Bud) Thompson, the former administrator at the Bruce Lea Haven, the Bruce County home for the aged, be the housing chair- man for the proposed non-profit housing project for the village. He will receive the same meeting, pay as the members of village council. COUNCIL Resolution Council received a letter from the Town of Southampton wishing Lucknow council to endorse a resolution. The resolution criticizes the government for its funding of • education, saying government education spending "has not kept pace with the costs" of education. The resolution recom- • mends that government increase its share of the cost of education while "lessening the burden on municipalities for raising taxes toward education. Lucknow council endorsed the Town of Southampton resolution. Where's grandfather's pipe? One might well ask! According to Statistics Canada, the proportion of non-smokers seems to in- crease with age, reaching its peak among those aged 80 years and older. Nearly 80 percent of persons in this group were non- smokers in 1981 - 30 percentage points more than the proportion of non-smokers in the group aged 25 to 44.
