Peter Melville Johnston
Peter Melville Johnston, a rural
mailman who gave over 57 years of
distinguished mail delivery service in
Kinloss Township, died at the Pinecrest
Manor Nursing Home on Saturday, May 2.
He was 90 years of age.
In 1969, Mr. Johnston was honored for
the completion of 52 years in the employ of
the Canada Post Office. He held the honor
of having the longest service of any postal
employee or mail contractor in
southwestern Ontario and, according to
one source at that time, was believed to
hold the record for the longest service of
any rural mail contractor in Canada.
His long service to the postal service
began in January, 1918, when he took over
the mail delivery on the RR 4 Lucknow
route. In those days, and for many years to
come, he also had the contract for hauling
the Holyrood mail from the Lucknow train
station, where it was received, to
Holyrood. Four years after he started driv-
ing Lucknow RR 4, it was changed to
Holyrood RR 3 with the same boxholders.
Rural route 4 Lucknow ceased to be at that
time.
When Mr. Johnston retired from the post
office in 1975, he had delivered the mail for
57 years and three months. At the time of
his retirement, he was flown to }ttawa at
government expense and given a standing
ovation in the House of Commons.
