The Crime Stoppers program, which
SPEC IAL
enables you, the citizen, to get involved in
catching criminals, with no risk to
yourself, will be operational in Grey and
Bruce Counties as of May 15, says Murray
D. Smart, the chairman of the program.
Crime Stoppers is a non-profit progam
relying on on co-operation between the
police force, news media and members of
the community. Crime Stoppers en-
courages people to call the police with in-
formation to solve any serious crimes
already committed, those about to occur,
and, or, the whereabouts of missing
persons.
Owen Sound RCMP Constable Cam
Croal, the police co-ordinator for the
Crime Stoppers of Grey -Bruce, says 100
per cent of the news media (television,
radio, newspaper) in Grey and Bruce
Counties have agreed to co-operate in the
program.
Each week, the Lucknow Sentinel will
run a story on the "Crime of the Week"
which one unsolved local crime will be
featured in the newspaper. Information
received which results in an arrest can
earn the ealler a reward of up to $1,000.
If your information fits the criteria,
Crime Stoppers offers you a method in
which you can pass this information on to
the police and never have to reveal your
identity! At the same time you will be
eligible for a cash award.
Anonymity Guaranteed
When you call Crime Stoppers' toll free
number 1-800-265-3787, you will be assigned
a special code number which you will use
to identify yourself in all future dealings
with Crime Stoppers personnel.
The call will not be traced, nor recorded.
You will not be pressured to testify. No one

will know who you are!
Unlike other reward programs which
stipulate "arest and conviction" Crime
Stoppers pays upon arrest only. Your
waiting time for the pay -out is drastically
reduced.
Your reward will be paid to you, after
proper identification of your code number
at a pre -arranged location. The police will
not be involved unless you wish. The
rewards vary from $50 to $1,000 depending
on the accuracy of the information and the
seriousness of the crime.
A group of concerned citizens comprise
the Board of Directors. The reward fund
does not consist of tax dollars, but monies
solicited from the provate sector by the
Board members. It is the Board's duty to
administer the program, control the funds
and pay the rewards.
If you wish to make a tax deductibe
donation to the Crime Stoppers program,
please mail a cheque or money order to:
Crime Stoppers of Grey Bruce Inc., P.O.
Box 1119, Owen Sound, Ontario. N4K 6K6.
According to information on Canadian
Universities from Statistics Canada, the
fields of engineering and applied sciences
had the highest growth rates in the number
of graduates between 1975 and 1983. The
average annual increase was nearly seven
