The Lucknow Sentinel, 1987-04-29, Page 2Pae 2—_ 1 Wednesda A 11129 1987 Huron -Bruce MPP and Minister of Health Murray Elston chats with Lucknow village councillor George Anderson and Don McTavish during an informal "Meet Your Can- didate" get-together at the homrof Mary MacDonald of Ripley. Will there be an election'in Ontario in the near future? Elston says if it's called, it won't be announced for at least another two weeks, because of an upcoming throne speech and Ontario budget announce- ment. (Alan Rivett photo) Leadership key to election • from nage 1 to present it," said Mr. Elston, which could further delay an announcement on an election. Liberal NDP Accord As for the much publicize accord bet- ween the Ontario Liberals and NDP, which will end in June, Mr. Elston said the main items included in the accord, including extra -billing, pay equity, reform in the workplace and daycare, have all been touched on, and legislation proposed by the Liberals. "We've exhausted the items (in the ac- cord) and we've carried out all the en- quiries. The NDP was not happy how we did it, but no matter how much we did, they wanted something extra. ... After the legislation was passed, they wanted all the credit, but when the administration work was to be done, they didn't want anything to do with it," he said. Mr. Elston, when asked for a central issue of an election, says it will be based on leadership with Premier David Peterson showing himself to be "the best of all the (party) leaders." "He has addressed the tough issues, ex- plained the issues, and has invited com- ments from the public. Some people have said, 'he talks to me like we were sitting in my livingroom'. People appreciate his ge- nuine nature," he said.' When asked of any problems with adap- ting to running in a new riding (Bruce) , Mr. Elston said the biggest problem is the size of the riding and getting around to meet the people. "I'm trying to meet as many people as I can. I'm going to have to work on covering the ground," he said. As for election issues unique to Bruce County, he recognized that the rural economy is under stress, but conceded it was a problem which has hit the rest of the province as well. He said the province is countering the slump in the rural economy by increasing the size of the agriculture budget. In Bruce County, the government has also supported industrial expansion with the advent of the Bruce Energy Centre in Kincardine with the province committing $6.5 million to cover the costs of bringing water and sewage services to the boun- dary of the site. Most of all, Mr. Elston said the people of Bruce County want to be listened to by the ' government. He said Premier Peterson has made a commitment to ensure that the entire province play a part in the government. "The people of Bruce want a govern- ment which pays attention to them...As a government, we won't forget about any part of the province," he said.
