Ripley youth wins scholarship
Two 1986 University of Guelph graduates
who have returned to the farm after
finishing their studies received $3,500
scholarships in a recent ceremony at
Guelph. The prestigious Carr Scholarships
are made annually from an endowment
from the estate of Samuel Leister Carr to
graduates whose university career includ-
ed involvement in ^ampul and community
activities as well as a good academic
'record. The winners Must be active
farmers with a financial stake in their
farm operation.
Carr, who farmed in Etobicoke before
urbanization overtook the farm, died in
1971. His sister-in-law, Ethel Carr of
Mississauga, presented this year's
scholarships .to Neil McCutcheon of Owen
Sound and Paul Harris of Ripley. McCut-

cheon received the Samuel Leister carr
Scholarship, awarded to graduates of the
four-year degree program in agriculture;
Harris received the William Park Carr
Scholarship, awarded to graduates of the
two-year diploma program in agriculture.
Harris comes from a dairy farm, where
he is building up his stake in the herd bas-
ed on his 4-H calves and their progeny. He
has won a number of trophies and awards
in his 4-H activities. Since graduation, he
has assumed herdsmanship respon-
sibilities at home, while his father looks
after other farm activities. He has also
been active in church and athletic ac-
tivities in his community.
As a student at Guelph, Harris was in-
volved in student clubs, athletics, the
square dance team and the College Classic
auction sale of purebred livestock.
March good time to join Junior Farniers
Right now is your chance to join in the
fun! If you are between 15 and 30 you too can
join in the opportunities available through
this organization.
The name has always been misleading
because in reality there are few "farmers"
in the clubs. The club would better be called
by some other name, but don't let this deter
you from giving it a try. Remember, like
anything else you only get out of it what you
put into it! So, if you only attend one
meeting and find it boring you have not
given it enough of 'a chance. You will find
that by attending more activities and ex-
pressing your interests and desires to the
executive, that they will work to make it ex-
actly the way you want it.
Contact one of your local Junior Farmer
clubs and ask them what they have to offer
you. I'm sure that you will be pleased!
Let's do it! Let's join in the fun! Let's join
