The prestigious Carr Scholarships are made annually from an endowment from the estate of Samuel Leister Carr to graduates whose university career includ- ed involvement in ^ampul and community activities as well as a good academic 'record. The winners Must be active farmers with a financial stake in their farm operation. Carr, who farmed in Etobicoke before urbanization overtook the farm, died in 1971. His sister-in-law, Ethel Carr of Mississauga, presented this year's scholarships .to Neil McCutcheon of Owen Sound and Paul Harris of Ripley. McCut- Page 21A cheon received the Samuel Leister carr Scholarship, awarded to graduates of the four-year degree program in agriculture; Harris received the William Park Carr Scholarship, awarded to graduates of the two-year diploma program in agriculture. Harris comes from a dairy farm, where he is building up his stake in the herd bas- ed on his 4-H calves and their progeny. He has won a number of trophies and awards in his 4-H activities. Since graduation, he has assumed herdsmanship respon- sibilities at home, while his father looks after other farm activities. He has also been active in church and athletic ac- tivities in his community. As a student at Guelph, Harris was in- volved in student clubs, athletics, the square dance team and the College Classic auction sale of purebred livestock. The name has always been misleading because in reality there are few "farmers" in the clubs. The club would better be called by some other name, but don't let this deter you from giving it a try. Remember, like anything else you only get out of it what you put into it! So, if you only attend one meeting and find it boring you have not given it enough of 'a chance. You will find that by attending more activities and ex- pressing your interests and desires to the executive, that they will work to make it ex- actly the way you want it.
