Two fire calls in January To date in this new year of 1987 the Ripley Fire whistle has sounded twice. The more recent one was last Thursday morning January 22 at 8:30 just as the boys and girls were crossing the main intersec- tion on their way to school and stopping for a couple of minutes to see which way the red fire truck would go and we were doing the same thing. Well the truck went south to the home of Mrs. Bogues - about a block and a half from the fire station. It was a chimney fire and they had it out and back in one hour. Answering that call were firemen Bob Johnston, Dan MacDonald ( Blake St.) Bill Robinson, Brian Pollock and Don Peterbaugh. The first fire alarm was at one o'clock ( noon) on Monday January 12, 1987 - a chimney fire at the home of Heinz. Mueller on Heather Drive in Huronville south, Kin- cardine. Firemen answering that call were Chief ,Rod MacDonald, Bob Johnston, Chris Anger, Doug Martyn, Jack Scott, Bill Robin- son, Dan Fry, Ed McGillivray, Brian Pollock, Dan MacDonald (Ripley) and Don Peterbaugh. Happy Hearts held dance Last Thursday evening, Jan. 22, from 8 to 10:30 p.m. the Happy Hearts Seniors held a dance in the Ripley Legion Hall. They were fortunate in picking their nate just before the snow storm of this winter took over. Few words on caffeine Passing on a bit of information on cat'feine - it is a white powdery or crystalline substance in coffee, tea, colas, cocoa, and hocolates. If you cut these out from early morning on through a day you can get withdrawal symptoms ranging from a sleepy feeling to. a throbbing headache. Adenosine is a natural inhibitor of nerve signals and Caffeine being a cousin in chemical structure can take its place. Looking at our text on human physiology` we had just about given,up on the understan- ding of how caffeine works, but we think that caffeine steps in' to take the place of adenosine which gets used up and so gens the action going until the adenosine level gets built up. ATP - standing for Adenosine (A), the T for 3, P for PO4 in ordinary chemistry. Now if we put C for Caffeine it would be CTP hence the chemical equation for muscular energy. When we move any part of the body ordinarily Adenosinetriphospate breaks 'up into Adenosinediphospate along with hydrogen phospate -I- energy for mus- cle contraction. ATP ADP + H3PO4 -± energy. Now put C for caffeine and you have the first of four equations in the use of caf- feine. Thus it is muscle work beyond where they would naturally stop if caffeine was not introduced into the body. So extra energy -- extra pep then more wastes after a while. So one makes the muscle cells work beyond where they want to stop and get rid of wastes. Now a comparison of coffee, tea, cola, and chocolate in the amounts of caffeine: 1 cup of regular coffee has 100 milligrams of caf- feine or 1/10 of a gram, 1 cup of tea has 40 milligrams so you can drink two and a half cups of tea to get the 100 mg for a cup of cof- fee, and 25 mg of caffeine in a small chocolate bar. Horticultural society reports Well it is 12 noon on Monday so we will make a cup of tea to get that extra energy going to copy this report ,brought in by Gail Visitors van der Hoek. We appreciate tiau s worts and thank her for it. The Ripley and District Horticultural Society met Jan. 20, 1987 in the form of a dessert luncheon. Olwen MacAuley, Joan MacLeod, Edna Stanley and Marion Gain- ble served cake and tea to 30 inembers. The president, Edna Stanley, called the meeting to order and business was discussed. The new executive and directors for 1987 and 1988 were called upon. Katie Irwin graciously installed thein into the society. They are as follows - Past President Edna Stanley, President Mary Worthington, 1st Vice President Evelyn Coiling, 2nd Vice President Emily Bushell, Secretary Gail van der Hoek, Treasurer Bette MacLeod. come over for coffee Over for coffee with Bill and Marie Park and Gertie Park were Gary and ,Patti Johnston of Goderich and Charlie and Mil- ly Johnston of the Nile on Sunday afternoon.
