Many winners at Happy Hearts euchre party
The Happy Hearts euchre party was held
in the Ripley Legion Hall on Monday last
week.
The winners were - Marion Gamble, Ver-
na Finlayson, W.R. Lowry, and Marjorie
Thompson. The lucky prize was won by
Donalda Pollard. The next euchre will be
held on Jan. 19 at 2 p.m.
Takes part in Nutcracker Suite
Sarah Jarvis, daughter of Mary(Irwin)
and Wright Jarvis of Calgary took part in
the Alberta ballet company's presentation
of the Nutcfacker Suite in Calgary at
,a€hristmas. She is the granddaughter of Mrs.
freta Irwin of Ripley Street in Ripley.
Sarah's mother, Mary is a graduate of the
former Ripley District High School.
New resident comes to Villa
Mrs. Clara Shiells is now a resident in
Huron Villa having moved there a few
weeks ago following the passing of her hus-
band, Stewart. Their home in the west end of
Ripley opposite the funeral home is now bill-
ed for sale with Robert Scott of Pine River in
charge. He was in charge of the Dinnie Mac-
Donald home sale recently completed. It is
just two, homes west of the Shielis house. e'
Receives monetary award
Congratulations go to Paul Harris, son of
Bob and Shirley Harris, Con. 12 west in
Huron township on his receiving an award of
$3500 announced last week. At pr sent Paul
is the herdsman at the family farm.
New clerk-treasifl'er announced
The local news on Wingham radio
C K.N.X. this past Sunday morning had two
announcements from Ripley. First was that
Mrs. Susan Stevenson who has been the
assistant clerk -treasurer in the village of-
fice will become the clerk -treasurer as of
Monday Feb 2. Clerk -treasurer William
McCreath will beher assistant. In other
words Bill and Susan will officially change.

New fire chief appointed
The second news item on Sunday was the
appointment of Rod MacDonald as chief of
the Ripley Fire Department taking over
from Ivan Cook who has retired from this
position which he has held from 1975.
Niels Fredericksen passes away
Niels Fredericksen of Malcolm Street in
Ripley passed away last Wednesday at 3
p.m. Jan 7, 1987 in the chronic ward, Unit 4,
in the County of Bruce General Hospital at
Walkerton in his 79th year. Niels was born
on Friday, February 28, 1908 at Asferg, Den-
mark. The funeral service was held at
MacKenzie -McCreath Funeral Home in
Ripley at 2 p.m., Saturday Jan 10, 1987 with
Rev. Glen Macpherson, St. Andrew's United
Church in Ripley officiating. Cremation in
London followed, this with spring int ent
of ashes in the Ripley Cemetery. V. itation
at the funerlome was on Frida Jan 9
with memorial 'donations to the Heart and
Stroke Foundation of Ontario. Mrs. Tena
Wyld of 19 Noranda Drive in Toronto, sister-
in-law of Niels was in charge of the ar-
rangements with funeral director Bill Mc-
Creath. Niels was predeceased by his wife,
Nora Wyld, his brother, Wilhelm of Asferg
and parents in Denmark.
Surviving Niels are Harold and Tena Wyld.
of Toronto and family members, his brother
Hans Frederiksen of Peking, China at pre -
'sent, his nephew Steven Frederiksen of Fort
Walton Beach, Florida, his niece
Karen(Frederiksen), husband and son
Ratan and Andrew Ray of the Southern

Earl S. Lavery
In his 69th year. Earl S. Lavery of Point
Clark passed away in Parkwood Hospital,
Westminster Campus, . South London this
past weekend. A private family service was
held at the A. Millard George Funeral Nome
on Ridout Street in London on Monday after-
noon January 12, 1987. Cremation is to
follow with interment of ashes in the Pine
River Cemetery at Lurgan on the lower
Fourth Concession in Huron township. He is
survived by his wife Elaine and their three
daughters Kelly - Mrs. Phil Klinkhammer of
London, Jill - Mrs. Evan Ehgoetz of
Thamesford, Vicki - Mrs. Ron Funston, RR

Shirley MacDonald was convener and in-
troduced our speaker Mrs. Bess Jones of the
Bruce Shoreline Family centre. She gave an
interesting talk on Stress, dealing with a
definition of stress and then things we can
do to relieve stress. She gave us a relaxation
exercise. The best 2 ways to avoid stress are
appropriate diet and adequate sleep. Lunch
was served by Anne McCosh and Maryse
Cale.
Kay Collins, Sandra McGillivray and Mat-
thew visited Mr. Sam Wismer and Merrall
and Marg Kuehl in Waterloo on Thursday.
Congratulations to Lathy and Al Martin of
'Kitchener on the birth of their baby boy,
Jared Alexander on New Year's Day. Janet
Farrell spent a few days with them.
Jim and Fran Farrell and family visited
with Derk and Tinie Logtenberg of Ashfield
on Sunday to celebrate Jim. and Fran's
birthdays.

Benefit dance held for Emmertons
A large crowd attended the benefit dance
for Lorne, Linda and Cindy Emmerton held
on Saturday evening January 10 in the
Ripley Huron Complex.
The Glenn Boyd orchestra supplied the
music for the evening. You will recall the
Emmerton family lost their home and
possessions In that propane gas explosion on

Sympathy extended
Sympathy of Ripley folks _goes to Frank
Abela on Queen Street east in Ripley on the
passing of his grandmother, Mrs. Grace
Kerr, of RR 3, Goderich (the Amberley
area) and former resident of Kincardine.
The funeral service ,was held in the Davey-
Linklater Funeral- Home on Princes Street
in Kincardine yesterday afternoon Jan 13,
1987.
B.C. man dies at 75 years
John (Jack) Alexander Hodgins
John (Jack) Alexander Hodgins died at
the Surrey B.C. Memorial Hospital after a
lengthy illness on January 4, 1987. He was
in his' 75th year.
He is-asurvived by his wife Lydia
(Thompson) Hodgins and brother Ellison
of Kinloss, sisters Aileen M. Hedley, Lorna
Massia of London and Betty McLeod of
Windsor and their families.
Mr. Hodgins, is predeceased by his
parents, Lorne and Ethel Hodgins and a
sister Helen.
The late Mr. Hodgins was a plumber by
trade in later years. As a- young man he
worked in the gold mines of northern On-
tario. He volunteered and served in the
Canadian Armed Forces during the Se -
cid World War, serving in a tank division
in England, Holland and Italy.
After the war years, he served an ap-
prenticeship in plumbing in Guelph,
Fergus and Elora areas.
After his apprenticeship, he moved to
Edmonton, Alberta where he met and
married his wife in 1957.
After working in the Drayton Valley
area for some years, he bought a motel on
the newly -opened Alaska Highway at
Dawson Creek which he operated for some
time. After selling it, he moved to Surrey,
B.C., continuing his plumbing business
there, in Vancouver .and vicinity, until
poor health forced him to quit.
Funeral services were held at the Valley
View Chapel in Surrey, British Columbia
on Friday, January 9. Cremation followed.
Raymond Joseph Leddy
The church in. St. Augustine was filled to
capacity when the funeral of the late Ray-
mond Joseph Leddy was held on
December 31, 1986. Mr. Leddy died on
December 28 at the age of 90.
Mass of the Christian Burial was solem-
nized by Father Frank Dentinger of St.
Augustine, assisted by Father Edward

Mr. Leddy was born on November 12,
1896, a son of the late Bill Leddy and
Catherine Redmond.
Raymond spent all of his years on the
family farm in West Wawanosh which has
been in the Leddy name for three genera-
tions until he moved to Lucknow in 1958.
He was very proud of his family, farms,
horses and cattle.
Mr. Leddy was a member of St. Mary's
Church in Lucknow and a member of the
Town and Country Club.
He married the former Gertrude O'Con-
nor in October of 1933 who survives him.
Mr. Leddy is also survived by four sons
and six daughters, Dennis and Aileen, Kit-
chener; Kenneth and Cathy, West
Wawanosh Township; Bill and Jean,
Goderich; Danny, Oshawa; Maureen and
Bill Thomson, Lucknow; Monica and
Wayne Fear, Brussels; Bernadette and
Bill Andrews, Auburn; Kathleen and Len
Baird, . Wingham; Ann Marie and Bevin
Tiffin, RR 3 Wingham and Elizabeth and
Alvin Moore, Belgrave.
Twenty-four grandchildren, one great
grandchild,, and one sister also survive.
He is predeceased by a baby, daughter,
one brother and two sisters.
The altar boys were grandsons, Stephen
and Dean Tiffin of Whitechurch and Danny
Thomson of RR 1 Lucknow.
The pallbearers were his grandsons
Raymond Leddy, Kitchener; Jeffery
Thomson, Michael Andrews, Auburn;
Kevin Leddy, St. Augustine; Paul Fear,
Brussels; David Leddy, Southampton.
Flowerbearers were Wilbur Brown and
Bert Moffat of Lucknow and Bert Moss and
Raymond Boyle of RR 2 Auburn.
