Pee Wee A's win convincingly in games played this week The Lucknow Pee Wee "A's" had a very successful five days last week in league play winning three games to lift their record to nine wins, three losses and three ties. The Pee Wees travelled to Blyth on Mon- day and dominated their weaker opponent. Lucknow 8 Blyth 3 Mike Vandervelde led the Lucknow onslaught, beating the goalie four times and assisting on two others. Peter Need scored twice and had one assist. a n Hunter also scored twice. Other assists went to Dwane Porter, Justin Murray and Adrian Rau with three. In gaining his first whole game win, Derek Turner was well tested as Lucknow again drew an unusually high penalty total of 26 minutes. Thursday night the boys travelled to Mildmay and skated to another strong, yet penalty filled, win. Lucknow 6 Mildmay 1 The team had an excellent first period with four goals and one penalty. Goals were scored by Dale Priestap, Vandervelde, Hunter and Neufeld with assists by Stevenson, Rau and Robbie Crich. The balance of the game saw much less offence with another 36 minutes of penalties. Despite the penalties, defenceman Terry Stanley scored his first goal of the season assisted by Neufeld. Stevenson demonstrated his excellent goal scoring eye when he flipped the puck into the corner of the net for his team -leading 15th goal in 12 games. Mildmay finally beat the Skillen-Turner goaltending duo on a powerplay shot which went high ,and bounced behind Adam Skillen. Friday night, Lucknow hosted Tiverton with the home team forced to come from behind in another scrappy contest to defeat the visitors. • Lucknow 6 Tiverton 5 Tiverton jumped out to a quick two -goal lead before centre Chris Stevenson made a great effort to score, making the shot after being tripped. Tiverton scored two more as goalie Derek Turner seemed to be hav- ing an off night. Lucknow drew within two when Stevenson beat the defence and drew the goalie out of the net and flipped the puck in. The first half of the second period saw fast and furious skating with many pppor- tunities before Rob Crich scored hp- sse- cond of the year on a clean shot from the circle. Stevenson tied the game when he stole the puck while penalty killing, poked • it past the defence and beat the goalie to the puck for an empty net goal. Lucknow went ahead to stay when Gavin Hunter slid the puck through the defence to set up Stevenson in front who beat the goalie. The third period saw Lucknow draw eight penalties and spend over 12 minutes playing at least one man short. While short-handed, Brad Rhody put a nice shot into the net after Peter Neufeld fed him a pass from behind the net. The defence, led by Russel Sutton, back -checking winger Dale ' Priestap and goalie Adam ,Skillen who replaced Turner after the first period, managed to allow only one goal which came with one second to play. Ripley Tournament On Saturday, the Pee Wee's were spon-• sored by the Ixucknow Legion Branch to ply in the zone tournament in, Ripley. e first game saw the host Ripley team meeting Lucknow. The game'; featured three action -packed periods with`a total of. only two penalties and noscoring until the latter half of the second .period. ' Lucknow 3 Ripley 2 The skating was.fast and furious for. the. first two periods, with both .Ripley's Art . Houghton and Lucknow"Adam Skillen be- ing well tested and meeting,the challenge in the nets with the help of two tough defences and a few well placed goal posts. The scoring drought was broken at the end of the second period when . Peter Neufeld stole the ..puck for a two -on -one break. Neufeld beat the goalie with a clean shot between the legs of . Houghton., Lucknow went up` by two ' when Don Cuillerier fed a pass to Neufeld who shot it „ in front to Vandervelde-who pushed; one passed the goalie. - Ripley was not to be deterred and broke out for a three -on -one rush that saw 'Rob Meabel take a pass from Mark McLeod who beat Skillen. Kevin Galloway tied the , game with assists from Carmen Lowry and Neabel when a shot rebounded off the boards and set up in front of the net. Justin Murray scored -Lucknow'"s° winn- ing goal on a two -on -one break when Vandervelde passed the puck from behind to Murray who picked iipiis, owl') rebound to score. Lucknow entered the championship ' round against Brussels who they had not played before.
