Smart Associates Ltd. were requested by council to under- take the survey and plan of development in preparatipn to licensing the 10 -acre parcel of land adjacent to the Inglis Pit and ac- quired in 1986, Council motioned the reeve and clerk to submit the annual petition for subsidy to the Ministry of Transportation and Communications. Council proceeded to deal with the salary and wage negotiations of township employees in closed session. At that point, the clerk -treasurer, road superintendent, drainage superintendent and grader operator left the meeting. A bylaw setting the respective salaries of municipal officers and staff was passed by council. Council authorized the building inspec- tor to issue a building permit to L.J. Lugsdin" for a storage shed. The landfill site supervisor was authoriz- ed by council to purchase wire.. for a bu ing enclosure and stakes to mark trenche. A bylaw authorizing the borrowing cf $500,000 in total. in 1987, if necessary, was passed by council. The representation on various commit- tees will remain the same this year, with the exception that Councillor K Todd will replace Jim Aitchison on the Farm and Safety Association a s the Lucknow Fire Area Board. The next meetling of c uncil wilt be held on February 3 at 9:30 a Lucknow gets grant for town hall The village of Lucknow will receive a grant, up to a maximum of $21,000, to assist in the upgrading of the Town Hall's basement, announced the Honorable Mur- ray Elston, MPP for Huron -Bruce, on behalf of the Citizenship and Culture Minister Lily Monroe. The grant, received through the Com- munity Facilities Improvement Program, and upgrading washrooms in an unfinish- ed basement room. This grant provides for 50 per cent of the estimated $42,000 total cost; with . the village providing the remainder. "A community centre is essential to residents in smaller communities such as Lucknow because they provide a local cen- tre for community meetings and ac - will help pr9de panelling, floor wiring, tivities," Mr. Elston said. unty hires new engineer By Al : n Rivett Dennis Merrall, o ondon, an engineer with Middlesex Count& for the past 10 • years, was hired ache new county engineer for Huron County at the meeting on January 8. Mr. Merrall, 38, who served as the depu- ty engineer in Middlesex County, will of- ficially start his duties:with the county on January 22 for a probationary period of one yearat a starting salary of $52,000 per year. "It will be my pleasure an honor to sery ed as the county engineer. Before I ac- cepted the county's offer,"I talked to a long list of people about the reputation of Huron County and discovered the county has a reputation for having a good roads system and a good roads department. I'll do my best to build on that good reputation," said Mr. Merrall in a brief statement to council last Thursday. At a meeting of the Huron County Roads Committee on December 12, Tuckersmith Reeve Robert Bell, the 1986 chairman of the committee, said the position had been offered to another candidate who subse- quently refused the position. It was then of- fered to Mr. Merrall, who was reluctant to move to the area unless a starting salary of $52,000 was made available. He also re- quested that a day be set aside to review the policy and operation of the roads department with the former engineer. The newly -hired engineer takes over from former county engineer R.A (Bob) Dennis Merrall Dempsey who resigned from the position to accept a position in Woodstock late last year. Mr. Merrall expects to move to the area afterthe school year from London where he lives with his wife and two teenage daughters. Council members appointed to committees Kinloss Township Council met for their regular session on January 5 with Reeve Barry Johnston and all members present except councillor Gibb: A motion was passed that application be made to \ the Ministry of Transportation and Communications for the balance of the subsidy on the 1986 expenditure. Dave Eadie was appointed to be the alternate reeve to attend the county coun- cil meeting in the event Reeve Barry Johnston cannot attend.
